Cloth Diapering

hello and washing machine question

Hi everyone, been lurking here for a bit. I'm a regular poster on PAIF and before that on IF board and we are expecting our first child in June. We would like to cloth diaper so right now I'm just gathering up a lot of info.

We are in need of a new washer (our current one is kinda old and barely has any washing options - you can't do a rinse & spin only for example). I've been looking around and this washer seems to have good reviews and these are the cycles: 10 wash cycles include: Whites (cotton), Power Wash, Heavy Duty, Bulky, Normal, Sheets, Rapid Wash, Delicate/Handwash, Rinse/Drain & Spin to handle everything from delicate synthetics to heavyweight cotton

Anyone have any experience with this washer (or one similar to it) for cloth diapering? I believe it is the washer Young House Love (if any of you were YHL blog readers) got within the last year and they cloth diaper but they don't blog anymore so I can't ask them about how it's doing.

Re: hello and washing machine question

  • I would do rinse/drain and spin as 1st cycle, then normal wash, then another rinse/drain and spin.
Old is actually usually fine for washing CDs.

  • Old washers usually use more water than the new ones... More water is better for cleaning dipes!

  • The washer I had when I first started cloth last year didn't have a separate rinse/spin cycle either so I just ran a full wash or set it to the rinse portion of the wash cycle. The advantage of doing a full wash without detergent for the pre-wash is that it gave the nb poop more time to dissolve and get rinsed away so my nb diapers were cleaner. I replaced that washer with another non-HE top loader that has more options when my old washer started eating holes in my laundry.

  • You don't need a new washer to do a rinse and spin....just run a cycle with no detergent. When I was on vacation and using my aunt's old machine, I did one cycle without detergent, then one cycle with detergent. Worked just fine. :) Just a thought if you want to delay getting a new machine.

Personally I have struggled with my HE machine. I would not buy another one unless it had an option to add water.

Also, YHL isn't blogging anymore?! When did that happen??

  • Thanks all. Current washer can also be fickle at times and not actually do a spin at the end and all clothes are soaking so have to do a whole cycle again and hope it spins the next time (sometimes this takes a couple tries).. Thinking I won't want to deal with that while doing more laundry due to CDing so that's why I figured I'd get a new one hopefully on a sale weekend like MLK.

@mamalamb10‌ will definitely be PMing you with a few questions. Thanks for the offer.

@BoothBaby‌ I know!! I was sad they decided to stop blogging this fall but I'm hoping they have something big in the works instead like a tv show. I miss reading about their family and projects.

  • My MIL has that one and I just used it for 2 weeks with cloth. It was AWFUL. I absolutely hated it. It has a default "water saving spray rinse" that you cannot un-select. You can only get rid of it by doing an extra rinse. Most of the time that was ok, but sometimes not. I ended up having to run the diapers through more cycles just to get them rinsed well. (I was only using 1tbsp of tide when I normally use 2).

Maybe I just wasn't used to it, but I was not a fan at all. Also it was very hard to reach the bottom.

I have an HE front loader (LG) that works well for us.

  • Interesting....It would not let me unselect that button unless I turned on the extra rinse. That was fine for the wash cycle but for my pre-rinse I usually do a warm quick-wash so I had to do an extra rinse on that cycle too.

Even after all that, I had to run a extra rinse (so total of 3 rinses) to get the diapers rinsed well.

Glad it works for you guys!
