I know we've talked about this a lot. Comes up every year and we have a lot of different takes on what we do in our own homes about Santa. There is the "I don't want to lie to my kids" argument, the "I don't want them to think if I lied about Santa I lied about God" argument, and the "Santa is magic" argument. I'm sure I'm missing some but those are the few that stick out in my mind. So I have a woman I grew up with. Her kids are my age and younger. She has a ton of them. More than Citrus even! She's had many many losses (miscarriages, stillborn and lost a toddler in a drowning accident) and she is the epitome of grace and love and one of the most natural mother's I've ever met. She's really fantastic. She has a blog and a book coming out next year and this is what she posted today. I think she kind of nailed it.
I think she nailed it too.....we are on the cusp with Katie this year, I'm pretty sure she's not believing, but doesn't want to admit it! We will be having this discussion before Easter! I love that she will now get to help make Christmas and Easter magical for her brother and sister.......
St. Nicholas has already visited our house this year, but DS1 still has Santa fever. It is kind of inevitable when they are school age and everyone is talking about it. He and I had some alone time before his dance class last week and he asked me if Santa was still alive. So I told him that St. Nicholas lived hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Then he asked if the Santas are just people dressing up and pretending to be Santa. And I answered probably. But even though he is questioning it, he still 'believes.' I've been thinking I should find a copy of "Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus" for when he finally stops believing.
I will say having St. Nicholas/Santa visit your house is worth it just to watch your parenting partner messily munch on cookies while bent over hovering over a plate trying to leave the biggest pile of crumbs to be discovered the next morning.
