Nursing blues

My DD is a week old.  When she was born i wasn't producing a lot of colostrum so i decided to use formula until my milk came in.  It's in but now when i put her to the breast to feed she will suck for less than a minute before breaking off and crying.  Her doctor says I should keep putting her to the breast first before supplementing formula but even though she latches well she doesn't seem to take to it.

I am currently pumping (after i try to get her to feed at the breast) but I'm getting worried that she won't ever take to the breast since its harder to get milk from than a bottle.  I know in the grand scheme of things its not the end of the world if she doesn't breast feed but after already needing a c-section, which i didn't want but was necessary, I was really hoping Id be able to have the bonding of breastfeeding by daughter.

Is there any chance she could take to the breast still?

Re: Nursing blues

  • I had to supplement a couple times in the hospital, but instead of a bottle they had me latch DS onto the breast and use a device similar to the medela supplemental nursing system. If you just google that you can see a couple different kinds they make. It may help her not be so frustrated at first because she may be able to get more quicker. (I could see the frustration disappear on my son's face when we first tried it...my milk had not come in yet and he was hungry!!) You could even use the breast milk you've been pumping to supplement if you wanted. It may be worth a try. I wish you the best! Good luck!

  • Thank you @JannieJ!!  I'll look that up.
  • Do you have access to a lactation consultant? A lot of hospitals have them available by phone during business hours at least.
  • You and I in the exact same boat. I was just sitting here pumping and getting sad because it makes me so tired. Our DS was born last Thursday and I had a 36 hour labor and needed a c-section, so his first couple of days out he was so exhausted and slept a ton. This caused him to lose weight so we had to start supplementing. We were using a nipple shield because that helped him latch really well but I had to go up in size for the shield and he's having more problems latching with it. My milk isn't fully in and we are waiting for our Medela Symphony to be delivered because my LC said that will help my supply immensely.

I do what you do, offer breast first then bottle. We also give him what I pump in a bottle so at least he's getting some of mommy's milk. I called my LC yesterday and chatted with her and we are going in to see her on Friday. I realized very quickly that this breastfeeding thing is a lot of work and there are so many different things that can impact it being a success. I highly recommend seeing a LC if you don't already and best of luck to you!
  • To add to the rest of the ladies above. It is typical for babies to lose some weight right away without needing to supplement. I second the lactation consultant. We had issues early on I was freaking out because of the weight loss, but seeing her helped with the latch and peace of mind.

  • I have an appointment with an LC on Monday morning. Has anyone tried the SNS system?
  • This is my exact scenario. Unplanned csec and all. Not getting LO to breast caused lots of tears. I lived on a pump to bottle feed and still supplemented til my supply came in. Monday I met with the hospital LC and she gave me a nipple shield! It's been a life saver!! He finally nurses!!! My supply has also increased. And I go back this coming Monday to try and begin weaning from the shield. I suggest you ask for one when you see lactation or purchase one at BRU. I wouldn't be nursing without the shield and I can guarantee Id still be crying daily. GL to you!
