Keeping LO up during the day?

Do you ever try to keep your LO up during the day at all when they look sleepy? My parents are always encouraging me to do this so DS will sleep better at night but I know it's not the popular thing to do these days. Curious if anyone does this. It seems like LO would just fuss.

  • Nope, it just makes for miserable babies and miserable parents in my opinion. If LO wants to sleep I let her sleep, who am I to argue with that?
  • Not a chance. When she is overtired and doesn't fall asleep she becomes a screaming monster. I put her down to nap as soon as I start seeing her yawn. She still sleeps at night no matter how many naps she takes throughtout the day.

  • No, LO screams if she becomes over-tired so we try to get her to take naps when we see her start yawning. Keeping your baby up won't make them sleep better at night, it will likely just make it more difficult.

  • Definitely no! I thought this might help at first because DD had her days and nights mixed up at first but no. Overtired babies are so my harder to get to sleep at night. A bad day of napping often means a bad night where we're up a lot with lots of fussing!

  • Nope, agree with everyone else that she sleeps better when she sleeps during the day.

  • I encourage her to stay awake after feedings.  I usually nurse her for around 30 minutes then try to keep her up for another 30-60 minutes until she starts getting fussy/tired.  She's gotten pretty use to this schedule and handles it pretty well.  On the rare occasion she will seem overtired before we hit the 30 minute wake time mark, I will put her down a little early.  I usually have to wake her at the three hour mark to feed.

  • No, I don't try to keep her up, but I also do not avoid normal activities like vacuuming or other loud noises during the day. Saturday at our Christmas party it was loud and DD was held a lot. She barley napped and ended up STTN for the first time.  However; I believe that she should be able to sleep when she needs to and I don't want to try and dictate her sleep right now.  If she is tired there is a reason.  Her weight is also good so we don't need to wake to feed. Even if she sleeps a lot through the day or naps a lot, she usually only wakes once a night which I can handle just fine.

  • If she looks sleepy, she's going down for a nap. I do try to keep her up after feeding for a little while and then I put her down when she starts to look or act tired but I don't restrict sleep. She sleeps well at night and only wakes up to feed and then goes right back down. Keeping baby awake when they should be sleeping only makes them over tired and more likely to sleep poorly.
