Re: 11/17 - 11/23 Weekly Check-In

  • Age: 4 weeks 1 day
Sleeping: no more than 3-4 hours at a stretch unfortunately. Also, baby does this all day and does not have sleep less or more during the day or night.
Eating: He is EFF and lately has been eating 4oz every 3-4 hours and finishing off the whole bottle so we are going to start giving him 4.5ozs at one of his night time feedings and hoping he will sleep longer.
Working on: Trying to get him to sleep for a 5 hour stretch at night and consistently if possible. So far no success, any recommendations?

  • -Age: 4 weeks, 2 days
-Sleeping: Still sleeping well - sleeping from about 11 or so until 9 or 10 with consecutive 3-4 hour stretches.
-Eating: Still eating like a champ! I think we're still on the last days of the first wonder week so he's still eating a lot and rather frequently but we should be finishing with that any day.
-Milestones: Well, the wonder week was no disappointment! LO has started his social smiles in the last several days! I love it! :-)
He also has pretty good head control. He can hold his head up and steady for several minutes at a time now.
    -Questions: Nothing right now. :-)
-Working On: I'd like to move bedtime up a little earlier but it may be too soon. We're working on it though. Not having much luck. I was able to put DS2 down at 1030 one night earlier this week but that may have been a fluke.
-AW: Just that my big boy is already in 3 month and some 3 to 6 month clothes! I can't believe how quickly he's growing!

  • @kstirton‌ He was almost 2 weeks late so we're hitting the wonder weeks early. I had to double check but the app says social smiles are one of the new abilities. Weird. Is there more than one app out there for wonder weeks?

  • -Age 4w 1d
-Sleeping 2-3 hours at night.  It varies during the day.  He is usually pretty awake before noon, takes a good couple our nap. then starts to be really alert around 5 till 9
-Eating-EBF I think he is getting between 3-4.5 oz
-Milestones- he makes great eye contact! He can roll on his side already!
-Questions- He basically cries all the time unless he has his pacifier... anyone else experiencing this?
-Working On- getting off the nipple shield.  getting a consistent 3 hour stretch at night

We're at 4 weeks 3 days and get about 30 pacifier free minutes without crying. She's a comfort sucker and I'm not going to fight the bink for my own sanity.
  • Age: 4w5d

    Sleeping
: We've finally gotten to almost 3 hour stretches most nights. I'm currently working on transitioning from the RnP to the bassinet.

    Eating
: EBF, we are cluster feeding today. DS spent the night at Grandma's on Sunday and drank 2-2.5 oz. at a time from a bottle. He was eating every 2-2.5 hours, so that seems right to me.

    Milestones
: The social smiles just slay me!

    Questions
: Does anyone have a baby sling that works well for their newborn? I'm just not sold on my Ergo right now.

    Working On
: Sleeping in the bassinet, and I would like to establish an afternoon naptime and an earlier bedtime. I'm not into strict scheduling, but H and I learned the hard way yesterday that we need to be home at a reasonable hour so that we have enough time for our bedtime routine.

-AW: I finally figured out how to get the Ergo on without help or using a hanger and a mirror to position the back strap!
Can you explain this to me? Because I don't effin get it. Also, are you using the newborn insert?

    image      image

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @MmmPopcorn‌ We are using the newborn insert. Below are the steps I take and the second and fifth steps are the ones that made the carrier workable. Hopefully they make sense! If not, let me know and I can try and send a video or we could try Skype or FaceTime! I know how frustrating it is to not have a carrier you can use. I'm hoping to pick up a Moby after failing with the K'Tan.

    1) Clip waist (hip for me since I'm short) belt on.
    2) With the back strap in the correct height (I can leave it stationary now with this trick) clip it behind your back underneath your arms. This should create what I'd call a kangaroo pocket in the front where the insert will go
    3) Put LO in the insert.
    4) Lower the insert, with LO in it, into the pocket.
    5) Pull shoulder straps up over your arms.
    6) Check/adjust the front to make sure it's pulled all the way up and not bunching.
  • I'm sorry I found where it said social smiles, I'm just not lucky enough to have any yet!!

  • @Carebella Thank you! I will practice tonight.

Age: 4w2days Sleeping: a little too awesome actually, we are going on day 2 of sleeping through the 3 hr mark during mornings/early afternoons ... at night she's a little more consistent with waking to eat and over night uaually get a 5 or 6 hr stretch between midnight and 6. Milestones - she's tracking people and movements with both her eyes and head now, a couple really adorable coos, and holding her head up. The wonder week didn't say anything about social smiles just yet ... did I download the wrong app or was your baby born early #pineapple85? Questions: should i wake her to feed during the day or just wait until she wakes up? I haven't been waking her at night. I will ask this at 1 month appt on monday Working on: more tummy time, she's still not a big fan.
I do wake during the day if it's been too long.  There's a school of thought, that if they get enough opportunities to eat during the day, they do not need to wake up to eat at night.  Clearly, this doesn't truly apply until their tummies are big enough to get enough nourishment to last all night, but it makes sense to me, and worked well with my first, so I'm trying it again.

I love my Moby wrap with a newborn.  I have a ring sling too, but I haven't figured it out yet and really haven't tried much since I like the Moby so much.

-Age: 4w 3d -Sleeping: Except for yesterday he tends to give me 2-3 hour stretches with the occasional 4 hour stretch thrown in. Yesterday's 1-1.5 hour stretches were killer. -Eating: Doing great. Although I'm getting a little tired of the day time eating every hour. But it's worth it. If I get him in the Ergo or take him somewhere in the car I get longer stretches. So maybe time to do more of that. -Milestones: Jackson had his one month birthday yesterday! Questions: As 6 weeks pp comes up I know DH is getting anxious... anyone here have tips or suggestions on how to transition out of mom mode? Between feeling like a mom and not really like a wife, and having a gazillion things on my mind (like all the things around the house that need to be done), I have no idea how I'm supposed to get in the mood :( -Working On: Trying to come up with a bedtime routine. Also, trying to be better/more consistent with getting in playmat time, story time, and other good growth activities. Starting to be able to get more done around the house and with the pets... barely. -AW: I finally figured out how to get the Ergo on without help or using a hanger and a mirror to position the back strap! And putting Jackson in clothes is getting a little easier, I feel less like I'm going to break him. But he still spends a lot of time just in a diaper.
Meh - In the beginning you kinda just do it to do it.  Fake it til you make it.  Lots of foreplay, LOTS of lube.  I never regretted doing it after the fact, but it's not something I ever initiated until much later post partum.  And don't expect "success" the first time, or even the second.  While we got back in the saddle around 7 weeks post partum with my first, it was closer to 11-12 weeks before it was anything resembling enjoyable for me (and him, as a result).  And informal polling of my D12 mom's back in the day showed 11-12 weeks was more typical for getting enjoyable sex back in the relationship so have that conversation with your H so he's not expecting things to just be back to normal just cause you have the all clear.  If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. :)

-Age: 4 weeks, 2 days -Sleeping: Sleep has been really rough. He has been feeding every hour night and day for about two weeks and it's been a nightmare. Last night he finally had two three hour stretches between feeds, so I got a couple of two hour chunks of sleep. Doesn't sound like a lot, but I feel like a new woman today! -Eating: EBF, he loves to eat! -Milestones: Nothing big yet. He's making more eye contact and gaining better head control. -Questions: What are you all doing when your LO is quietly alert? He usually only lasts a few minutes during tummy time before he starts crying, and he really seems like he just wants to eat when he's awake. -Working On: Figuring out how to entertain this guy now that he's not sleeping all the time! -AW: My attempt at his one month photo today. Looks like I'm gonna need to try again when DH is home to help!
My older son is barely 2, so if D is content and awake, I usually put him in his seat or swing, or on a play mat - tummy sometimes, but it only lasts a few minutes, so on his back is more typical cause he'll stay that way content to wave his arms and kick his legs and look around for quite a bit longer - to chill while I play/interact with my toddler.  If the toddler is sleeping/napping, I'll try to chat at D or smile at him while he's awake, but I mostly just let him check out his surroundings and do his baby thing after I've fed him.

  • One more question! Is anyone else tracking eating times?? I'm still keeping a log of what time she eats, what time she finishes, and on what side (I block feed) It's helped me know when she is eating, changes if any and in adjusting some what of a bed time routine (we're still working on that part) I would like to "put her down" after her 11pm feed and I've been trying to keep this fairly consistent, however sometimes she's out after her 8pm feed and in that case we've just been leaving her in the living room with us, is that what you all are doing? And if I'm ready to go to sleep before she does I Just crash on the couch and DH wakes me up around 11pm, if she's not up yet.

Also, we are still in the RNP in the bedroom... when do you guys plan to transition to the nursery, or are you there already?

-Sleeping: We're sort of developing a pattern. Bedtime is 11 to midnight most nights, waking 3 to 4 am. It takes us about an hour to change and nurse and get back to sleep, and then she stays down for two more hours. She naps frequently during the day.

-Eating: EBF every 2-3 hours, occasional cluster feeds. That's daytime.

-Milestones: I questioned last week whether she smiled at me, but she most certainly smiled at DH today!

-Questions: When does baby acne subside?

-Working On: Getting a bedtime routine established. We're going to bathe, read, nurse, and lights out.

-AW: I wish I could post pics from mobile! She's so gosh darn adorable!

My LO had terrible baby acne. It lasted 2.5 weeks and didn't leave a mark!

  • @kstirton‌ We have an 8pm feeding and when we are done around 8:30, we usually keep her up until 9 and then start our bath time routine, which takes about 35min. Then we feed one more time and by then, she's super relaxed, calm, fed and exhausted. She's in bed by 10-10:15pm and usually sleeps until 4. When we go upstairs we dim the lights, put on her music box, turn on her night light and she goes right into zen mode. Do y'all have a bed time routine?

Do you bathe her every night? We fight for ways to keep her up after the 8pm feeding ... last night we just put her to bed at 9 (Carried her to RNP) but she was up to eat at 2, which is about right, however I like the longer stretch to end around 4 - just seems like a better sleep on our part b/c then she'll usually sleep until about 7am. Our bedtime routine is kind of weird b/c we'll put her pajama's on at 8pm feeding, and then after 11pm feeding carry her to rnp and turn on her sleep sheep. That's about it! I feel like the bedtime routine stuff should happen after 8pm feeding I guess that's why I'm conflicted. Maybe I need to sneak another feeding in there a little earlier, like 10 and start her bedtime routine after that?

actually -- I guess that would mean start a bedtime routine around 8 and THEN feed her again after? Right now we are only bathing her twice a week though. She has a tendancy to get really dry skin so I don't want to exacerbate it, but w/ the cold weather.

@kstirton‌ we have her bassinet by the bed and plan to transition her to her nursery at 8wks. Right now it doesn't make sense because I feed her so much (and the 6wk growth spurt is on it's way) but honestly, I think we will all sleep better when we are in our own rooms.

@kstirton‌ Yes I would a definitely sneak another feeding in after the 8pm feeding. I would aim for 10 after bath time. If you feed 8-8:30ish, it is not too hard to keep them awake until 9pm or so for bath time. Sometimes ours will almost be asleep at 9 after the feeding but we bathe her anyways, feed again and then she's out cold.

We do bathe her every night.
She LOVES her baths but not getting out of them lol. She hates that part but honestly a 5min cry right before her last feeding gets her really tired! We just bathe her with warm water every other night and with soap the others so we don't dry out the skin. I do however bathe her with soap underneath her neck and on her bum every night because of spit up and poop. I moisturize every night too.

I would give it a try. Does your LO like bath time?

  • @carolineheider‌ my LO prefers to tummy sleep too. I let her during the day in her crib, but am anxious about tummy sleeping at night. She won't sleep in her bassinet (next to our bed) but she might if I let her tummy sleep. I'm assuming you don't swaddle? Any tips on how to get more comfortable with night tummy sleeping (for me, she obviously would be super comfy!)? This is my first and I think I'm making myself nuts over thinking this...

My pediatrician was giving me the "make sure you put him to sleep on his back" speech and I said "He hates sleeping on his back...he likes being on his stomach." She then said that it's fine. He has good neck control, we don't swaddle, and he's right next to me at night, so I'm okay with it. His mattress is firm too. I just think about all the generations that were put to sleep on their tummies. He keeps his hands near his face (sometimes kind of propping him up like in the newborn photos), so I think that's good too.
Thanks! I think I'll try one of our spurts of sleep tonight on the tummy to ease me in. We've been bed sharing and I'm not super into it. I'd REALLY like her to sleep in her own space.
  • -Age 4w 1d
-Sleeping - last night we had our longest stretch, 6hrs (7hr between feedings)
-Eating - She is back to every 3-4 hrs with at least one 5+ stretch overnight. She did have a 24 hr period of eating every 2-3 hours including overnight and being very fussy. I am hoping that was her 3 wk growth spurt.
-Milestones - She's really starting to look at me instead of in my general direction, very cool
-Questions - for EBF moms, have your boobs started to feel normal again? I still can't put a towel on my nipples and at night the nursing pads are uncomfortable. Hoping there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
-Working On - more tummy time/play time

    Age: 4weeks 5days

Sleeping: we've gotten to where we only wake him up at the 5 hour mark at night to eat. If he wakes up before to eat that's fine, but we've been starting to get some good stretches at night. He also has been staying awake in the early afternoons, then takes a nap, and wakes up around 5-9pm.

Eating: EBF w/ a nipple shield, and the past few days he has went down on feeding, but we did take a weekend trip, so I figured it was that. Also we still are feeding him every two hours. Starting to think about just feeding on demand, but it might take a little bit.

Milestones: he has been reaching more with his hands, and is starting to coo some. We get a smile every once in a while, but I'm not totally sure we're the cause of the smiles lol. He also can roll from tummy to back, and lifts his head and looks around a bunch. I think he is afraid he is going to miss something lol.

Questions: anyone know of a good nursing cover? We have been trying to work on feeding in public, but he doesn't like the blanket falling around his face and with a nipple shield I can't hold the blanket and the shield in place to get him to latch.

Working on: feeding on demand, and feeding out and about. And trying to get off the nipple shield.

Aw: here is a cute picture of a smile I caught just this morning
  • @10xEmpire‌ my nipples are still really sensitive. My boobs are also a little tender...I hope the light at the end of the tunnel is soon!

@Finduilas‌ I haven't tried mine yet but I got this one https://www.thepeanutshell.com/Products/Nursing-Feeding/Nursing-Cover because it has something in the top the gives it some structure with the goal that you can have some visibility down to baby.
