Placenta previa

I'm 15 weeks +4 and have been told by my doctor that I should be on pelvic rest to try to get my placenta to migrate away from cervix. The guy doing my ultrasound said early in pregnancy it's likely to go away but if it doesn't I'll have to deliver via c section.

Anybody else been warned about this? I've consulted dr. Google a little to see if there's anything I can do to help it along. It seems I just have to hope my uterus continues to grow and to take it easy. If anyone has experience with this I would love to hear!

Re: Placenta previa

  • I had one with my DS, discovered at my 18 week ultrasound.  It ended up moving on its own, and I didn't need pelvic rest.  I hope yours moves for you! I believe most do.  :)

  • I had a low lying placenta with #2 but it moved upward. I am told a very high percentage end up fine. I suppose if you think of your uterus like a balloon even something quite near the opening at the start can be quite a distance away once you blow up the balloon. So hopefully you will fall in the majority that move :-) I wasn't advised to do bed rest or anything with mine. If you do end up with placenta previa I suppose you can take some positives from it as well. Your cesar will be planned and not emergency, you will have a definite birthday for your bub as you will know when the c section will be booked :-)
    Good luck
  • I personally haven't had this, but have two friends and a family member that did/do. What you have been told so far sounds like what they were told. FWIW, it fixed itself with my friends. The family member is still pregnant so we'll have to wait and see.
  • I guess I was the worst case scenario. I had placenta previa and it never moved. I ended up on bed rest at about 6 months. At 34 weeks my placenta ruptured and I had an emergency csection. She was 5 pounds and 17 inches but healthy and didn't need help breathing. I couldn't take her home for a few weeks though that was the worst part. My friend was opposite and hers finally moved at 34 weeks and she had baby fine full term.
  • I was told the same thing at my last ultrasound. I already have a SCH and went to check and see if it was smaller in size ( it was thank goodness ) but was then advised I have placenta previa. It was explained to me that if it is partial it has a really good chance of moving as the uterus gets bigger, however if it is a complete the chances of it moving are slim. I won't know more until my appt next month but hoping both of ours moves! Good luck. I was really not wanting a cesarean but we gotta roll with the punches one way or the other.
  • I was told the same thing a few weeks ago and also put on pelvic rest. My doctor sounds hopeful in that it may very well move but they won't re-evaluate until my anatomy scan on Jan. 23. Until then I've had to stop running (I've been an avid runner in consistent training for long distance runs so boo for that!) and I've had to give up teaching my Zumba classes. With that, drinking water like it's my only job and no sex (poor husband lol) it's really a bummer, but anything to keep our little nugget safe is worth it. Fingers crossed that we are in the majority and can get things back to semi-normal soon!!!
  • I was just talked to about this a little bit but will be following up in a few weeks to see if it resolves itself.
