Diet Soda?

I used to drink a good bit of diet pop. Not a ton, but a can or two a day. What is everyone's thoughts on it? Caffine free obviously... Diet sprite, sierra mist, ginger ale... The carbonation actually helps with tummy issues (bloating/constipation) Some people say the aspartame is bad, but no real research proves that... The only sweetener I heard to really avoid is sacchrin. Thoughts??

Re: Diet Soda?

  • There is nothing wrong with it. Even the caffeine is fine as long as you stay under 200mg
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't drink soda but I'm pretty sure it's ok in moderation.
  • I was told by my doctor that regular soda is fine - up to 200 mg of caffeine per day, but that artificial sweeteners (including those in diet sodas) were unadvisable. Your doc may think differently, but I'd still run it by him/her if you're worried.

  • Diet is never a great idea.... But, in saying that, I have 1-2 diet cokes a week, I was trying to cut it out before I got pregnant but sometimes need it with work and a crazy toddler. With DS I had more since I lived in the city and craved McDonald's fountain diet coke.

I would try to cut back a bit because 1-2 a day seems like lot (pregnant or not), but it's personal choice.

I stopped drinking pop years ago and really missed the carbonation. I have since switched to sparkling water and get the carbonation without the sugar/artificial flavor. Not sure if you have tried this, but it may be a good alternative to test out!
  • I love Diet Coke, but have cut back a ton since my DD. I also switched to sparkling water for the carbonation. I have never liked regular soda as it is too sweet. FWIW, I have never heard of baby being affected by the mother drinking diet soda.

  • Normally I would tell you to do whatever you want because I believe nothing is really off limits but diet soda is bad. Not even just for baby but for you. I would kick it to the curb while you have an excuse and never look back! Your body doesn't need any of that crap especially the aspertame. Its ridiculously horrible for you.
  • I second the sparking water, comes in so many flavors and is so refreshing!
  • My doctor said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING diet. Something about the sweeteners they use in those products.

  • I weened myself from soda using sparkling water, you can flavor it with fresh fruit or juice. All brands of sugar substitute trigger migraines for me so I can't have diet soda.
  • My doc said to avoid artificial sweeteners but I have a can maybe once a week. I used to drink a few cans a day. I still drink pop but limit it to one regular can a day max.

That being said, I didn't have regular pop in the house and after reading your post I grabbed a diet ;)
  • I'm trying so hard to quit diet soda. SO HARD.

  • It's bad for you when you aren't pregnant so it's bad when you are. Obviously once and a while won't kill you but I would recommend enjoying sparingly.
  • I avoided diet soda with DD (when I had been drinking 1/day before) and am avoiding it now too (not hard now with the m/s, plus I'd pretty much quit and switched to seltzer water prior to becoming pg because, as folks have said, it's just not a healthy habit). Good luck!

  • I avoid all artificial sweeteners as much as possible, not just while pregnant.  They are terrible for you.

  • I try to avoid artificial sweeteners as much as possible at any time now, but especially while pregnant. I do really love diet coke and hate the taste of regular, but I won't drink it pregnant.

  • I typically never drink soda, but I had THREE yesterday. I had sprite, ginger ale, and my first coke (& caffeinated drink) in about 4 months. My stomach was extra bloated all day though and even the smallest amount of carbonation was relieving!

You could also mix carbonated water with juices! Apfelschorle is apple juice and carbonated water. It's really popular here in Germany and it is one of my favorite drinks, ever! It's really refreshing too!

I drank diet soda at first when I was pregnant with DD, but stopped because I decided that diet isn't a healthy alternative even when you aren't pregnant.  I then switched to regular because I figured if I wanted a soda, at least I'd give my body some sugar it would recognize and be able to process.  This time I've stayed away from soda in general, just because I wasn't really drinking them before I got pregnant anyway (I gave them up in a effort to lose weight, who needs the empty calories of a soda when I could have a candy bar instead!).  I wouldn't do too much diet soda drinking though, artificial sweeteners are harder for your body to process and metabolize than regular sugar.

Add to this: splenda doesn't get processed either!  there was a study done (I'll have to find it) that said that if we keep eating/drinking splenda, it will continue to be eliminated in our urine and eventually the ocean will taste sweet from all the splenda we couldn't break down.  Not sure how reliable the study was, but it's interesting to think about!

Sometimes I feel a bit guilty about (only for the artificial sweeteners...not caffeine as I stay under the daily limit), but I have one or two cans a day. Only one if I have coffee in the morning.

ETA: Blech now I feel really guilty about it after reading this post! I just HATE regular soda...perhaps I will try to switch to flavored water.

  • I eat lunch meat, sushi, and soft cheeses but I do avoid soda while pregnant that has any AS or HFCS. I do have a real cane sugar soda a few times a week as a treat. I prefer real sweets in moderation to artificial crap, especially while pregnant.
  • With the exception of things that are most definitely dangerous (like caramel apples that are having listeria outbreaks), I eat whatever I want in moderation. I'm honestly jealous that you can drink soda at all! I miss my soda but I haven't been able to stomach the carbonation for several weeks now.
  • I must admit that I have been absolutely horrible with pop. I drink regular coke the diet drinks leave a gross after taste pregnant or not. So I told myself I would cut it out and start drinking more juice and water. If I get fast food than yeah or out to eat of course but not at home or on a everyday basis. Like PP said it's not good pregnant or not.
  • I drink one or two diet sodas per week.  My OB said to stay away from them too but I don't feel like it's a big deal.
  • My twitch is when people say things like "caffeine free, of course," while I'm sitting over here drinking a regular Coke. I drank full-on normal caffeine when pregnant with DD, and she has one head and no tail. She's fine. I've slacked back with this one just because it tastes weird to me right now, but that doesn't mean I'm doing it because of pregnancy (you know what I mean).

I had a lady at a McDonalds refuse to give me my soda when she saw my eight month pregnant belly with DD and give me a water bottle instead. I told her manager. I was PISSED.
What the actual f*ck?  It's not like you were asking her to serve you a few shots of liquor or to cut you lines of cocaine?!  The nerve of some people, those are the same people that have no kids but plenty of parenting tips in line behind you at the grocery store.

  • I was waiting for someone to put some science to this artificial sweetener discussion. Thank you.
  • I have diabetes, so regular is out since the risk of uncontrolled blood sugar is far greater to the little bean then anything that could be a result of artificial sweeteners.

Splenda is best since its not absorbed in the GI tract. Most diet sodas contain aspartame, however.

  • Glad this discussion is going on...even though it will probably not change my habits at all! : ) I know that artificial sweeteners are not good for you and during my first pregnancy, I stressed about it and if I had a occasional soda, it was regular- or I had lemonade or other flavored drinks. This time- I'm trying not to gain 60 pounds and I'm not going to stress about the artificial sweeteners as much. I usually have one diet coke a day- but I hope that my appetite/palate gets better in 2nd tri and that I can just do water and the occasional diet coke then. (Normally love water but makes me gag half the time now.)
