Uti infection while pregnant

Has anyone had a bladder infection while pregnant? If so, I heard antibiotics were okay to take but I'm terrified...

Re: Uti infection while pregnant

  • It's pretty common in pregnancy. You might have better luck using the search feature to look for others on the board with similar experiences.

  • I had two with my previous pregnancy and one already with this one. Antibiotics are safe and should clear it right up. Don't worry, it's very common during pregnancy. No reason to be terrified.

  • Nope, your OB is going to give you meds that will harm your baby because your doctor must not know what he/shes talking about.

  • After what i have been through this past week , it always makes me laugh when women are soo concerned over a minor infection. You OB or doctor would never prescribe you anything that would cause harm to your baby. Not to mention you need to be doing your part and drink PLENTY of non caffeine  beverages. being truely terrified is when you are in my shoes and already have been in the hospital once for several weeks and just gettin gout today after a 5 night 6 day stay and STILL having a kidney infection. I was so bad that when my fever spiked to 102 and nothing was controlling my pain they made the call to have me go under surgery. now for the  next 6 months i have to have a tube in my side with a bag connected that collects excess urine. after my baby arrives i will  have surgery again to remove the stone i possibly could have. needless to say i have been on meds that i wish i could have avoided but for the sake of my health mentally and physically i needed them. i am still taking an antibiotic and Norco to control the pain somewhat. hopefully i can get this all under control and have an easier pregnancy. best of luck to you. either way you have nothing to fear!
  • Take the freaking meds.. I had one, doctor gave me something cleared it right now. Your OB will not prescribe you anything that is going to harm you or your baby. They went through 12 years of schooling and THOUSANDS of dollars later to know what they are talking about... If you dont trust your doctor switch doctors.   Ive had a kidney infection...its not fun, take the mrfd

  • There are several antibiotics that are safe for pregnancy, and as other posters have mentioned NOT treating an infection is WAY worse for you than the medication you'd be taking for it. I just finished a round of meds to clear one up, it's really not a big deal. They're super common.

myconfessionx that sounds awful, and I'm super sorry you have to do all that on top of being pregnant. Hoping things get easier for you!

  • UTIs are terrible, sorry you're going through this OP. I agree with PPs, take the meds your doctor prescribes. He/she wouldn't prescribe it to you if it carried substantial risks to your LO. The risks associated with having a UTI that causes kidney infections is far worse than taking an antibiotic to clear it up. Besides, the treatment will probably be more aggressive than just nipping it in the bud, as shown by @myconfessionx.(Hope you feel better soon lady, what a nightmare)
I thought I was coming down with one (false alarm, thank goodness) and was advised to drink lots of water and cranberry juice as a preventative measure. Just some tidbits my NP offered that I thought I'd share. Good luck!

  • Thank you for replying back, it's my husband that wants to me stay away from everything it's our first so we're very cautious especially him. :)

I understand caution well. I have been sloooooowly relaxing from the paranoia that started when I started thinking about TTC, but it's not easy at all.

I just came from the ER and the doctor there thinks I might have a urinary infection as well. No for sure results yet. Hoping it's that and not appendicitis, his OTHER guess! If this is what a UTI feels like, my heart goes out to you and those others who have one. And especially a kidney infection because that sounds completely horrible.

At this point I just hope that it's the UTI and I can get meds that will work to get rid of it. In the meantime, cranberry juice!

  • I understand, I am cautious too. But, you have to think of both sides - what are the risks that an untreated UTI could pose for you and the baby? Probably more risks not treating it than taking a Class B (safe) medication.

  • I was just prescribed cephalexin for one. My Doctor assured me it was perfectly safe. It's class B here in The United States but I read that it is class A in Australia which is the safest on their scale! I was definitely nervous to take it and of course did my own research first but the benefits outweigh the risks so you definitely should take your medication. What were you prescribed?
  • My OB told me if I were prescribed an antibiotic for UTI to take it. This from the guy who doesn't want to treat anything and says everything is normal. So I would definitely take it.

  • Thank you guys so much. Makes me feel so much better husband just disagrees and he's so against it but I'm on it. On Macrobid
  • I had one too but didn't even know it. They told me after my first appt and gave me the meds. I felt much better after taking them because I was not having to pee half as much. I was worried too but researched it and decided a kidney infection would be worse for me and baby.
  • I have a uti and asked my doctor if the meds had adverse side effects for baby . My doc said nothing is 100% but the benfits of taking them would outweigh the risks. It's okay to ask, my doc said nothing is ever for sure , they way the benifts and risks with EVERYthing.. Being the first baby is nerve wracking and we all just want heAlthy and happy babies.
  • I've had a continuos UTI since before I got pregnant that I have to take daily meds for because I can't have surgery until after my daughter is born
  • Thank you guys so much. Makes me feel so much better husband just disagrees and he's so against it but I'm on it. On Macrobid
I know this is wrong to say but its your body and your doctor is telling YOU to take the medicine.. Your husband can be opposed to it all he wants but until he is the one carrying the baby, he cant tell you what to put into your body and what not to put into your body.  You have to do what makes you feel better and is best for the baby.  If your doctor told you to take the meds then take them.. If your HUSBAND told you to go jump off a bridge would you listen to him??? Probably not. Take the meds and just dont tell your husband if he is really that opposed to it.

  • Yup on them thanks though
  • I have had a UTI since 8 weeks of pregnancy. I am 17 weeks now. I have had 3 different meds prescribed. Hoping i will not have one at my next doctor visit! But OP, these infections are very common in pregnancy an you are not alone!
  • Hope you're feeling better and it goes away
  • Im 16 weeks.  I have had a UTI every month since September. I take amoxicillin to clear it up.  The Dr. said if it continues that I will have to go on a prophylactic.  Of course it worries me because sometimes we don't find out medicines can have serious effects until later in life, but the medicine they prescribe for UTI in pregnancy has been around for years and years and has undergone a lot of testing.  I wouldn't worry about it too much, I would just remind myself that it's safer to take the medicine than it is to let an infection go untreated.
