AW Spinal with terrible side effects

Hi ladies, I have been MIA for the past couple days. I had my cerclage done Friday and had minimal bleeding thank goodness. But during the procedure they did a spinal block which took the CRNA forever to find the space. Friday I had a terrible back ache due to the spinal and was told to be in bed for two days after the procedure. Well Saturday rolls around and I wake up to an excruciating headache, like can't stand up or sit up without my head pounding. My husband was worried and called the on call doctor which explained that I was having a spinal headache. He informed us that we could go to the ER and have them do a blood patch. So he insisted I go because I was in so much pain. Well the ER doctor did not do this and gave me medicine then sent me home. Well now I am still in bed unable to sit up or stand. I am unsure what to do, I will more than likely tough it out with the meds the doctor gave me and call my OB on monday. Has anyone ever experienced this from a spinal? Thoughts and prayers would be awesome, I hate taking all this medicine because I feel like I'm drugging the baby. I am just in so much pain.

  • You should contact the on call anesthesiologist for who did your spinal and see if they could get you in for an outpatient blood patch (or go to the ER again and specifically ask for the blood patch. ER doctors don't do it but they can contact the anesthesiologist to do it.)

  • Thanks, yeah I was so out of it last night. My DH told the doctor at the ER what the on call OB doctor said to do which was for the blood patch from the anesthesiologist. They gave me an IV with meds instead.
  • Getting ahold of the anesthesiologist is definitely the best way to get it done. If you don't know who did it, just call the hospital where you had the procedure and ask for anesthesiologist on call. Blood patches work really well and by the description of terrible headache worse with position changes, that's most likely what it is. All the meds in the world won't stop it, but 5 minutes of a blood patch and you will be like a new person.
  • My husband called the hospital and they informed us to call the doctor on call at my OB'S office to set it up at the ER. Well the on call doctor at the OB stated that only my doctor could order that and that if the ER didn't do it a first time that a going back a second would be no good. So it looks like I'm in limbo until tomorrow.
