Excess Lipase in BM?

Thursday was my 30th birthday and we went to a Christmas party out of town that night.  We brought LO and my mom with us. This was supposed to be our first full night away from LO.  We had two hotel rooms and my mom was going to keep her for us.  I brought more than enough milk for her bottles and I was super excited to have more than two drinks and get a full nights sleep.  My plans were quickly ruined when my mom called saying LO was refusing her bottle.

It had been hours since LO ate, so I knew she was most definitely hungry. When we got there, LO chowed down and quickly went to sleep.  LO has never had a problem taking bottles before, so I smelled the milk and it definitely didn't smell good.  It wasn't sour, but had a strong soapy smell.

I assume this means excess lipase?  Is anyone else dealing with this?  Do you scald your milk, or are you just giving formula when you leave?  I'm really disappointed, because I have a huge freezer stash that I'm assuming LO will refuse.

  • I had a bottle that LO refused from the freezer and it did taste soapy to me. The next bottle I defrosted was fine. No clue why! Try some more of your stash first.

  • I second that it may just be some of your stash. I've been using my early frozen and have only run across this once in a whole month of pumped milk.

It was so bad, I didn't offer it to LO.
  • Ok, your responses are giving me some hope.  The milk was from several months ago.  I'm going to defrost some of my more recent milk and see what happens.
