Cloth Diapering

BG Opinions

Hello Ladies!
Longtime lurker, first time poster here.  First I just want to say thank you for all your (unknowing) help while I was getting started with cloth diapering.  You ladies are hilarious and this is definitely my favourite board to poke around in.

My daughter is just starting to outgrow her newborn stash of prefolds and covers.  She has a bit of a wetness sensitivity, so in building her OS stash, I'm looking for either AIOs or pockets so I can have a staydry layer between her and the insert.

I'm going to grab a few BumGeniuses as they seem to be very popular.  I lean toward the 4.0s and stuffing them with a bamboo insert (anyone have experience with Applecheeks bamboo in a BG?).  My husband likes the ease of Freetimes but I worry about bulk and I'm not a big fan of microfibre.  We've already tried the elementals, and while they are okay they are cut a bit wide and seem bulky for my skinny girl.  She's also a heavy wetter so I worry about the Freetimes and compression leaks.

So would you recommend purchasing one type over the other, or should I grab 6 of each and see what happens?

Thanks!

Re: BG Opinions

  • I would try some of each. I love my freetimes. They are the bulk of my stash. I loathe pockets. Others feel exactly the opposite of me. You never know what will work for you.

  • You should try a few different brands. If you are worried about bulk, there are trimmer options than BG.

Sorry I meant to add some brand recs to my last post but DS was having a pre-bedtime meltdown.

DS has always been on the skinny side and the brands that have worked for us, as far as a pockets and AIOs go, are Blueberry Simplex (2.0 are sized and OS are not, but have a nice optional layer of fleece inside), Grovia AIO, Totsbots easyfits v4, Thirsties OS pockets and Oh Katy pockets.

AI2s are also a nice trim option. The only ones I have tried are Best Bottoms and they get a lot of love here.
  • I tried going to pockets but storage space quickly became an issue for me (as in I have none) so I went back to exclusively using Best Bottoms and flats with covers just because they take up noticeably less space. Pockets and AIOs take up roughly the same amount of space so that may not be something you need to consider.

  • Right now is a great time to try BG 4.0s. Cottonbabies.com has a buy 6 get 1free sale plus a free 4.0 in Bubble or Sweet for spending $100. If you hate them, you could likely resell for what you paid. I use mostly 4.0s & Flips.
  • Thanks everyone!  I'll grab a few of each and see how it goes.  I have a few Applecheeks with bamboo inserts already so I can test out the insert and see how it fits.

freezorburn thanks for the suggestions!  I have a few Applecheeks (love them but pricey) and Best Bottoms (not entirely sold yet, but I think she might need to do some more growing first).  I also have a Blueberry Simplex but again she's not quite big enough to fit them (I think they say they start fitting around 12 pounds, so they seem larger).

I would also recommend trying a few. I love my 4.0s but I'm not a big fan of my freetimes. AppleCheeks bamboo are my absolute favourite inserts to use in everything though.

My DD is long and lean and BGs are a good fit on her. The stay dry aspect of the 4.0s really works for us. And I wouldn't consider my DD a heavy wetter but we have only had a few leaks with BGs since we started using them and it usually just boiled down to her falling asleep or something that caused her to be in the diaper for a bit too long.
