BF moms who still nurse at night (often)

I am so tired! Ds2 has started waking more often at night to nurse or looking for the paci. I have an activity tracker (jawbone up24) that tracks my sleep and needless to say it's way worse than I thought. Does your DH help you at night now that the babies are a bit bigger? Has your DH given a bottle of pumped milk in the MOTN so you could sleep and was it worth it? My DH would get up and do it if I asked but by the time the bottle warms up and he starts feeding him, I'd probably be wide awake so I don't know if it's more of a hassle. If we had the space, I would sleep in a spare bedroom but we don't have one. I just need a reset button and to get some sleep. I feel like I'm running a rat race.

  • He doesn't help at night. It's just easier for me to grab her and nurse than for him to prep a bottle. I try to catch a nap on the weekends to help me get through the week. Usually, he mans the kids while I head upstairs and catch up on rest. So far it works for us!

  • My H doesn't help (though not because he doesn't offer, he does) a few weeks ago we started having nights like that. It lasted for about 2 weeks. I started co-sleeping to get a few extra winks. I would put him in his crib, and after the 2nd wake-up would bring him into bed with me. Then one night, he just started sleeping better. Now he's giving me a 6 hour stretch followed by a 5 hour stretch. Occasionally he will wake up a 2nd time in that 5 hour stretch but it's gotten way better.

If you are not comfortable co-sleeping and want to have your H give a bottle at some point in the night then go for it! But if you wake up engorged you need to pump. Per my LC the pressure will tank your supply, but as long as you "take the edge off" your supply should be fine, since breastfeeding is supply and demand.

  • I don't have H help at night. My LO doesn't like a bottle and it is easier for me to just side lay and feed him. It is proven in our house that I function better than H on little sleep. Maybe this is an UO, but since I am a SAHM, I feel like waking up at night is more my responsibility because H has to get up early for work, or he gets home really late.

Maybe you could have H do a bottle during the day and you could take a nice long nap?

  • We just went through two weeks of DD having a nice long chunk of sleep when I dirt put her down and then waking up every hour from like 330 on and it was awful. H wouldn't get up and do anything at night because like pp said by the time the bottle was warm and what not I would be awake and she would be pissed. However, what he did that helped me soooo much was when she finally decided to wake up for the day I would nurse one last time. DH then would take her Into the living room and he would let me sleep for another hour or so. I would feel so much better when I finally got up and I could handle the craziness better.

  • It is just easiest for me to nurse her than to have DH get up and make a bottle. He would if I asked, but I am sure I would be awake as long keeping her happy while the bottle is made as I am now to nurse.
I have her in an arms reach co sleeper next to the bed and just move her over to the bed and do sidelying nursing at night now. I never even have to fully sit up or fully wake up. I am still really tired, but the setup helps a whole lot. I put her back in the bassinet and fall right back to sleep.

  • Since her sleep went to crap about 6 weeks ago, and she eats multiple times a night I let DH give her a bottle of pumped milk for one MOTN feeding about 2-3 times a week. I do not pump to make up for it. I do sometimes wake up when she cries while waiting for the bottle but it is still one less time I have to get up.
I'm not too worried about supply because it's only occasionally and she eats all the time.

  • Could you go to a relatives house or a friend's house for a good night of sleep?
  • My LO started waking up more and then got sick and was up every 2-3 hours. To top it off I had the flu and not getting sleep just about killed me. But I agree it takes too much time to make a bottle and it would wake me up anyway. I did ask DH if he would bring her to me since she sleeps in her own room but that never happened.

Does he eat a lot when he wakes up?
  • My LO often STTN now, so I have also started offering the paci first before getting him up to eat!
  • DS still gets up twice at night usually. DH never gives a bottle in the MOTN. It's quicker to nurse than dealer with warming up a bottle, and then I would need to figure out when to pump extra because I try not to have DS take more in a bottle than what I'm pumping in a day. However, if DS doesn't go right back to sleep after nursing, DH gets up to deal with getting him back to sleep. Usually DS goes back to sleep fine, but the couple times a week that he doesnt, DH is happy (well maybe not happy, but willing) to help.
  • However, what he did that helped me soooo much was when she finally decided to wake up for the day I would nurse one last time. DH then would take her Into the living room and he would let me sleep for another hour or so.

This. DH gets up with DS at 7 am and let's me sleep until he has to leave for work at around 8:30 don't know why but that last hour and a half of shut eye makes all the difference in the world.

  • Now there's 2 of them neither of us ever get to sleep in, seemingly. I get DS and DH takes DD MOTN. But when it was just DD we would alternate weekend mornings to sleep in for an extra few hours. And when I was badly sleep deprived I started going to bed at 8pm and DH was responsible for DD until at least 1am. He brought her to me to nurse then took her back to settle her to sleep. So I had at least a few hours of uninterrupted sleep.
  • I've pumped right before bed and left it on the counter for my DH. Breast milk can be good on the counter for 8 hours and my kid has no problem with room temp milk. Maybe give it a try once to see if it's worth it?

Same here. I normally pump at midnight and DS wakes to eat around 2
  • Mine doesn't help at night, but it's an unfair distinction. Until this coming Monday, he has worked overnights (except a few weeks here or there) since both babies were born. I'm not sure how our what will change now that he's going to start being home at night (he's switching to second shift).

Though it's never been a problem in the past, I'm having trouble pumping this time. I have a new pump this time around, and I don't like it as much. I don't get enough milk when I pump.

  • Thanks ladies! DH does work a wacky schedule so it's hard for him to take over a lot and let me sleep in. And when he is home, we have about 1,000 things to get accomplished. On top of that, it is never quiet in this house in the mornings with a toddler :) DH is going to try to handle one night this week while we are both off to see how it goes.
