High-Risk Pregnancy

Dr. not in favor of bed rest.

Hi ladies,
*sorry for writing so much).

At 19wk 5days I went for my anatomy ultrasound. The tech discovered I had a short cervix but it wasn't a concern at that point. However, the Dr. Put me on pelvic rest and request that I come back in two weeks so my cervix can be remeasured. So Tuesday last week I went in, and the tech find that my cervix had shortened dramatically and funneling. Dr. Send me to L&D for monitoring. And it turned out I was contracting like crazy, without knowing. I stayed overnight and was given medication to stop the contractions, and nightly vaginal progesterone. The next day my Dr. Discharged me. He told me his not a fan of bed rest because research shows they don't prevent preterm birth. However, he said research also shows women who have jobs that requires them to be physically active tends to go on ptl. I'm a server at a busy restaurant and needs to be on my feet, and I'm constantly moving fast and carrying plates and drinks. I've been paying more attention to my body, and i've notice when I'm on my feet I experience more pressure on my pelvic/abdomen. Which scares me a lot. I want to go on disability because I don't want my condition to get worse. I'm only 23wks and 5days, so I want my pumpkin to keep cooking until 37wk. But I know for a fact that will be a challenge if I keep working. How can I go on disability? And does my Dr. Have to sign the papers even if he don't believe in bed rest much?

Re: Dr. not in favor of bed rest.

  • I know that some doctors are anti bed rest, but I think with you job, you need to push for going on disability. The physical demands and the stress of waiting tables could send you into labor quickly. I think you'd have a better chance to keeping baby inside if you were not on your feet rushing around all day. I would think most doctors would agree with that!

I would call the doctor back and tell him that you are uncomfortable continuing to work. If your doctor does not work with you on this, I'd say get a second opinion. Good luck! I hope baby stays in for another trimester, at least!

  • Research has shown that bed rest really doesn't do much for many conditions where bed rest is considered standard part of treatment. At the end of the day, its up to you to decide to go with what he says or get a second opinion. He is speaking from experience and also just because that's his experience doesn't mean that what will happen with you. It may be worth calling to talk to him and express your concerns.

  • Do what your heart tells you. If I were you I would go on bed rest. Baby will only get heavier and you will feel more pressure on your abdomen. My doc put me on disability because I had placenta pervia. They sign all paper work and you mail it.
  • My cervix is short and funneling and i was having pretty bad contractions. My doctor does reccomend lots of rest and I certainly feel that rest along with the progesterone has helped me. If I do a bit too much or have to lift my 13 month old too much in a short period of time I definately feel more stomach tightenings and pressure on my cervix and they don't calm down unless I lie on my side and drink water.

I say talk to your doctor about how physical your job is and how your body feels working and ask to be on disability. If he doesn't agree seek a second opinion from a specialist.
  • Thanks ladies for your responses. A few days ago I made an appointment to see another doctor I was seeing before. I have an appointment this Tuesday. She told me to bring the paper works. So I'm really excited!!! I have been home from work for three weeks now, and I'm going crazy with boredom. But, I totally rather be bored, than stressed and running around for hours. And putting my pumpkin at risk. Thanks again for the response!
  • If you don't mind me asking, bby2015. How many weeks were you when you started the progesterone? And how far are you now? I'm just trying to get an idea of far they help prolong pregnancy. I know it's different for every woman, but I just want an idea.
  • They started me on progesterone vaginal dose at 31 weeks. They said they would have started earlier but we didn't know my cervix was shortening until I went to the hospital with preterm labour symptoms.

They did the first ultrasound then and saw funneling and sent me to strict hospital bedrest until I hit 32 weeks (they said cervix was 1.1 at that point).

They followed up at 32 weeks 3 days with a new ultrasound and the Doc said funneling had eased up and cervix was 1.8. Doc said that things can change and the positive change was most likely due to the rest with the help of the progesterone. I have to continue progesterone and modified bed rest until delivery.
