Question for STMs with outside babies

For those of you STMs who have your outside babies :) just curious if you are feeling like bringing baby home/caring for baby is like riding a bike or does it feel all new? DS is 4 so I feel like I forgot all of the baby stuff I'm about to go through. Thanks for any feedback!

Re: Question for STMs with outside babies

  • I have a bit of a clue as to what I'm doing this time, so that makes it a lot easier. That and dh is home for the holidays. DD will be 2 a month from today, and I was actually amazed at what I had forgotten about (like some umbilical cord stuff).

  • 8 years since DD so I feel like a FtM about a lot of things!
  • Im not worried about the baby stuff. I'm worried about being a mom of 3, though.

  • The baby thing is no problem for me. The part where 3 of my kids are age 3 and under? That part is taking some getting used to.

  • I actually feel more relaxed this time. but i'm in a completely different situation than before. Latching is still difficult for unknown reasons. But overall it all feels kinda new again despite DD1 only being 2.

So much this! My DH started taking conference calls again this week and I feel like I am drowning. How is it so hard to go from two kiddos to three? The baby pretty much sleeps all day, but somehow I feel like everything suddenly got sooooo much harder.
  • DS1 is only 2 and a half so this time it's like riding a bike. The hardest part is being a mom of 2, the newborn part seems so much easier this time but he's a really good baby. Plus, DS1 was colicky and didn't latch so this calm and nursing baby who sleeps a lot feels much easier.

My DD1 is also 2 so it's like riding a bike. Unfortunately it's the same old colicky reflux bike for me.

  • Latching was... Weird because my 8yo had no issues but i babysit in my home m-f so no biggie. Im familiar to the littles.
  • DS is 3 1/2 - I feel like it's new all over again for some reason. At least I did for the first two weeks. Now I'm letting up some on week 3. I think it's because all babies are different. I'm experiencing some things with DD that I never did with DS.

  • ds#1 was 4.5 years old when ds#2 was born.  I'm not going to lie...It felt like I was learning everything all over again.  Now, ds#2 is not even 2.5 years old yet and I am terrified that I have no idea what I am doing!

I was going to mention this to you before. Have you thought of taking her to a chiropractor that specializes in pediatrics? I know some people think it's "hocus pocus" but it can be very effective at solving an underlying issue that you don't even know is there. We actually had a very prominent news caster write to a local magazine about how much it helped their daughter. They were at a loss prior to that and it really helped.

I'm not saying it will help...but I think anything that's safe and tested is worth a try. Just a thought ?

To OP...sorry. My #2 is still inside :)

  • DS is 11, so I was a little rusty. But, the thing about DS being 11 is that I'm also 11 years older and I have a lot more patience in my late 30 than I did in my 20's. So, we're just calmly going with the flow!

  • DS is 2 so I remember a lot of stuff and feel waaaaay less panicked this time round. But-I had obviously blocked out how incredibly difficult the first few weeks of nonstop round the clock breastfeeding are. this really sucks! The benefit this time round is that I know it won't last long, so I can be a little more patient with it.

The major challenge this time is juggling my needy 2year old with my 2week old newborn who is always nursing.
  • Feels like riding a bike. Even though ds2 will be 5 next week, it is all very familiar. It was easy to get back into my routine. And since my ex-husband was deployed during the first 3-4 months after having dd1 and ds2, and many months at other times, I'm accustomed to getting into a mode.

It was a little more challenging when I had ds2 because my girls were 5 and 3 at the time. But now that they're 10 and 8, and in school, it's just me, ds2 and the LO. He's at the age where he can help in small ways.

  • Thank you all for the feedback! It's great to hear that most of you are feeling like it's familiar, even though I'm sure the first couple weeks will be a rude awakening for me :) I love my sleep!

Chiropractors scare me, but my mom was saying the same thing. They used to take her sister (who was mentally and physically disabled) all the time and it helped tremendously. It's worth a shot. Anything is at this point! I have to get over the fear of them breaking her in half :-S

Watch a video or two online and you'll see how gentle they are with newbies. There's no quick jerky movements like you'll see with adults.

Edit: my med school would find and kill me if I didn't add that there's no strong evidence that it helps (but I doubt it'll hurt either, so worth a shot?)
