Diaper Rashes

Hey Mommas!
I know some of you are still waiting on your LO's to arrive. But for those who have their babes already and STMs I need some help. My LO turned a week old today, we got discharged Weds and since before discharge he developed a diaper rash. He has a lot of diarrhea and we switched his formula yesterday which seems to be helping and he's also breastfed. Anyways, does anyone have any miracle cures for diaper rashes??
We have tried just about everything OTC now and of his pedi's recommendations. His little bum is so raw and raised and he screams with every changing and it breaks my heart. Help this momma out! Any home made concoctions or "old wives" remedies??

Re: Diaper Rashes

  • Our pedi told us to use Aquaphor wren LO got a diaper rash at 7 days that started to bleed. It worked wonders...and quickly too.

  • Malox (liquid in the green bottle), Aquafor, and A&D (the kind with zinc). Mix equal parts until you get a nice paste. My pediatrician calls it "Miracle Cream". It is great for the blistery rashes. Coat the whole tush with it and make sure you are changing diapers every hour during the day.

If it doesn't get better in a few days: Consider a milk-free formula (some babies are really lactose and milk sensitive in the beginning). Also, switch diaper brands. I had to cloth diaper my second child practically from birth because he was so sensitive.
  • I am surprised your pedi didn't recommend something before discharge.

  • On our discharge the nurse said if you find yourself without butt cream and baby's got a rash, squirt some breast milk on it. I figure it's worth a try.

I will definitely be trying the "Miracle Cream" tomorrow. We also considered the lactose issue but the diarrhea was much better today since switching formulas so we're waiting to see how that pans out. I use all sensitive diapers and wipes and just started using just warm cloths on his bum. But I will keep the diaper sensitivity in mind also. The rash right now is just right around his bum hole and crack. And we change AT LEAST every hour during the day. He was popping as we were changing him until today. My poor little man. Thank you so much for your advice, very helpful!
  • Up the frequency of diaper changes. Boudreaux's Butt Paste Maximum Strength (40 zinc). Switch out wipes for cotton balls and water, and let the area dry completely (or gently pat dry) before ointment and diapering. Diaper-free time as much as possible during the day (chux pads or garbage bags under receiving blankets work well for floor protection). Consider the amount of dairy in your own diet; this is often the culprit in breastfeeding babies.

I second the dairy comment. My LO had a rash and terrible gas until we figured out that I needed to stop eating dairy. It really helped. Also try some breast milk on the area if you are all out of other methods. It actually seems to work for a lot of moms I know.

  • The only thing that worked with my DS was Vaseline. We also had to quit using wipes. Even the sensitive wipes gave him a rash. We had to use wet paper towels and vaseline at every diaper change for the first six months. We were then able to use sensitive wipes.
  • I have used sudocream with dd and ds and it has worked really well. On particularly bad diaper rashes I will also slather on some vaseline.

And it doesn't always matter if the wipes are sensitive. My friends ds got a terrible rash from "sensitive" wipes.

  • We are using dry wipes since the commercial wet wipes could irritate skin. Our pediatrician was ok with us using desitin.

  • Breastmilk, coconut oil, naked time and cloth wipes. Good luck!

  • We took our little one to the pedi yesterday due to a bad rash. Right now we are allowing air drying (which is working great but mommy and daddy are getting quite dirty) plus the butt paste and warm water and wash cloths. No wipes until it is gone. The doctor also said we could use cortisone 10 if it got worse. I heard aquafor is amazing so might try that if need be!

I'd be careful with steroids because if it's a yeast rash, it could make it much worse. Just FYI;)

If it's raised at all, it could be yeast. OTC clotrimazole with beaudroux's or triple paste works great.

  • I'd second trying to eliminate things from your diet (dairy etc as mentioned above), try using water-moistened cloth wipes (or water wipes), triple paste, changing diaper brands (a lot of them are scented - look for a sensitive skin brand). Maybe let baby's bum be out of a diaper and exposed to air for a couple hours at a time - with a good waterproof pad underneath.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies. So since last night we have eliminated wipes altogether and are using warm wash cloths and patting dry after then using aquaphor since I forgot I had picked some up the other day. So far it seems to be improving so I am hoping this will be our answer. And if not I will be tapping into all of your recommendations one by one til I find my poor baby a cure.

We are definitely staying away from the steroids!! I did some research and pretty much found what you are saying! The pedi we saw was at another practice since it was the weekend and our office was closed, so we didn't know much about him. Due to this we decided not to go ahead with that recommendation and stick with the beaudrouxs maximum strength, air drying and warm wash cloth. I am going to check out the triple paste since it has gotten such great reviews!!

    Thanks!!!
  • Reopening this thread after my LO had a bright red rash with spots of raw red spots just between his little cheeks. He's EBF and we use very natural diapers and wipes. I started using cloth wipes and water, butt paste and no diaper time per the pediatricians rec. No improvement over two days. So then I transition to coconut oil, baking soda baths and a different babyganics cream on addition to the above regiment. Still nothing! So after reading this thread I went out to Walgreens and got the maximum strength butt padre, maalox, bag balm and lotrimin because the doctor suggested possible yeast infection. Finally after using a variety of these it's gone from bright red to light pink on the past 2 days. But I still see the little red raw spots mostly around his anus. It's not a large area but it bugs me he is still not 100%. Any suggestions? Should I just Continue what I'm doing or introduce something new?
  • Auqaohor and AD are the only ones that helped with our little guys bum. His were raised and at one point a little spot opened up and bled a little:( the auqaphor has been the best.
