Trying to Get Pregnant

How long should you wait to get pregnant after D&C?

At the end of August 2014 I began misscariage of ID twins. I first took tablets to pass them but that didn't work so on Sep 12th I had to do an emergency D&C. My period came back December 02nd, over 2 months after and my doctor told me to wait until 2 cycles pass before trying again. I won't lie, the whole miscarriage took it's toll physically and I am a little nervous about trying again. I wanted to know if anyone had a similar experience and how soon after did they become pregnant and if they had or is experiencing a healthy and happy pregnancy

Re: How long should you wait to get pregnant after D&C?

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I agree with PPs. Different doctors seem to advise different periods of time to wait on a case by case basis. My friend was instructed to wait 3 cycles after her ectopic whereas I was told to wait 1 cycle after my CP.

Follow your doctor's advice and wait the 2 cycles. Then try again when you're ready.

  • Definitely listen to your doc. I had a d&c in July then a repeat in Oct for retained tissue. He told me to wait one cycle because the second one he didn't scrap the lining just removed the last bit of tissue.
  • I agree with PP's on following doctors advice to wait the 2 cycles. Also, just wanted to say I'm so for for your loss.
  • I would listen to your doc, but I will tell you my experience. My OB said to wait three months after my D&C. I went in for my well woman exam two months later and we talked about my TTC plans. Once I told him I had already had two regular cycles he gave me the green light. We had a BFN the first cycle after our loss, but I was just happy I ovulated and had a normal cycle. I know once we do get pregnant again I will drive myself crazy with worry about another m/c.

  • Thank you all for your responses. I agree and I am waiting. I had a regular cycle in December so just watching for my January cycle then I will start trying to conceive. It's been a long road and I'm almost scared to think about it but I turned 36 last November and I want nothing more than to be a mother. Both my husband and I truly want a family. Since the return of my period, my whole body seemed to have returned to normal so I think that is a good sign. Ironically, we are getting married on what would have been my due date and we never planned that so I take that as a good sign. Again, thank you all for your suggestions and I'm praying my January cycle comes as scheduled so I can start trying in February :)
  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad that you have a good plan in place.

I echo PPs regarding the mental health aspect. Don't be afraid to speak to someone if you feel you need it.

    Good luck.

  • Hello…I found out I was pregnant July 22, missed miscarriage at about 7-8 weeks, and D&C on Sept. 12th as well. I would have been due april 2nd with a baby girl. At this time, I have had three periods since the D&C…three very long periods that started with spotting and then became heavy. My husband and I started trying last month after two periods but it didn't take. I was surprised considering that we got pregnant the first month we tried in the summer. But I also don't think I ovulated last month. The ovulation test I took never detected a peak. So this is our second month trying again. I did peak yesterday, so we have our fingers crossed. I have my three month check up with my doctor on Tuesday. I feel that my body is finally ready. It does all take a lot out of you emotionally and physically. I think I know how you are feeling, and it is comforting to speak with people in a similar situation. I would listen to whatever your doctor's recommendation is considering that every person and situation is unique. My doctor told us to wait for two cycles. But like I said, I just finished my third and I finally feel like my body is fully recovered. I wish you all of the best.
  • Thank you so much @Workofheart8‌ , I am so very sorry for your loss. It is rough experiencing a miscarriage, emotionally and physically but I'm glad to hear that you are feeling better and I pray that you and your husband will have a successful and healthy pregnancy!!
  • OP I'm very sorry for your loss.

In addition to what everyone has already said... you are very welcome here, and many women on this board do have children, but remember it is a "trying" to get pregnant board. Check out the "Pregnant After A Loss" board (PGAL) for success stories. Also many ladies here are also on the "Trying To Conceive After A Loss" (TTCAL) board and they have found a lot of support there.
