    Definitely helpful info.

My DD used to get fevers of 104-106 frequently as a toddler. She always acted normally and never had ear infections or any other noticeable issue. They would last a week or so, but she never seemed to be sick in any way.
Thankfully there was never hospitalization required.

That's very good information! In cardiology the doctors always said the best sources were the parents. A baby can't tell you they don't feel bad so the only way you know is by noticing behavioral differences. If the mom said something was wrong the doctors believed something was wrong. It was nice to be so trusted!

I like a lot of that article, but I resist the summation that "you need to push for a pediatric ER doc."

A regular ER doc should have been able to make that diagnosis (it's not an uncommon one). They fucked up badly. A pedi ER doc is not necessarily less likely to fuck up.

That ER lapse really sounds like an epic fuck-up. Extra school helps with more fine-grained decision-making, but if a provider looks at a baby and fails to notice "that baby is circling the drain" -- that's a sign of something really wrong. Deep fatigue, too many patients, or just not being good at their job.

In an emergency I think the best advice is to go to a good ER near you ("pediatric" or not) and then to ask those really good questions that the article had at the bottom. Not necessarily pushing for the sub-specialist.
