Milk Protein Allergy

Long story short...our DS has been diagnosed with a milk protein allergy and has switched to Similac Alimentum. Anyone have experience with this...

Hoping it will eliminate his bloody stolls, and increase his interest in waking to eat/eat more/more frequently.

Re: Milk Protein Allergy

  • We haven't had an official diagnosis, but DD seems to have a sensitivity to cow's milk as well. We are ebf, so I've had to cut out milk, ice cream, cheese, etc from my diet. I only noticed bc we had 2 separate, random days that my poor baby was up screaming all night (while the day or two in between she slept 6-8 hrs!) The only similarity in those 2 days? I had ice cream. I pretty much played trial & error. Ever since I cut out dairy we haven't had any issues.

Sorry I'm not much help on the formula portion :-/

  • Us too, except for us it's eggs as well. Since DD is ebf that means no milk, cheese, ice cream, butter, soy milk, tofu, margarine, or eggs for me.

If it's a true sensitivity or allergy, then switching will help a lot and you'll have a much happier baby. But it can take a week or so for all the cows milk proteins to work their way out of his body, so give it time. It took 2 weeks of me eliminating all the above food for DD to feel totally better.

Yes, one of my twins has a milk protein intolerance. She wasn't having noticeable blood (though her sample tested + for blood), but she was clearly in distress. Screaming fits that couldn't be soothed, awful gas, and refusing bottles.

I EFF, so her pedi also switched her to Alimentum. Her symptoms improved shortly after being on it, but it took about a week before I noticed a major difference. She's much more content now, and her appetite is 10x better. She's right on track w/ weight gain, which had been an issue before.

GL & I hope your LO feels better soon! FYI- not sure if you're already aware, but some insurance companies will cover Alimentum since it's medically necessary for your LO. This has been a HUGE help for us, as that stuff is not cheap!

  • We are dealing with this too. We ebf and I'm 5 days into having eliminated all dairy. At this point, I haven't seen an improvement. Fortunately lo's symptoms aren't horrible, but they are bad enough that I'm just ready for him to feel better.

Make sure you've eliminated soy too. 50% of babies with a milk sensitivity are also sensitive to soy. I switched to almond milk and I use it in lots of cooking. I've even made chicken pot pie and biscuits with it. I don't like to drink it though but Almond Breeze makes an almond-coconut milk mix that's actually really good.

I've pretty much cut it out, but having a hard time because it's pretty much in everything! I don't drink soy milk or eat any obvious sources. Guess I need to try to cut out even the miniscule sources too.
