NT scan versus bloodwork

I was in on Wednesday for an appointment, and got a regular ultrasound. Everything looked good, doctor's happy.

They set me up to get bloodwork, which they said was to test for genetic issues like down's and various trisomy disorders - I think she said it was called pentax? They also scheduled me for an anatomy scan, toward the end of January.

They didn't schedule, or mention, doing an NT scan, and I kind of didn't realize that until just now. Is that an either/or thing? Am I covered if I get bloodwork, but not the scan? I know there's a window where you need to get that done, and I'd assume my doctor's on top of things here. But I was kinda wondering if anyone else did just bloodwork.

Re: NT scan versus bloodwork

  • I just did the bloodwork,  I couldn't get a NT scan in the time frame recommended.  Those tests are very accurate and if they all came back as negative, you should be okay.

  • My insurance just covers the bloodwork, and not the NT scan and based on my history, that seems okay.

The NT scan is a regular ultrasound and they use the cursor on screen to mark and measure the space between the skin on the base of the baby's neck (the nucal fold) to see how much fluid is between them. The blood testing is for other markers of chromosomal abnormalities that would be present in your blood supply. Depending on how far along you are, they may have done this if your appointment was for genetic testing. I ask a lot of questions during ultrasounds "what are you looking for - what are you measuring? What does that mean?" - I feel like my techs would just go about their business and not say anything if I didn't ask (and just let me enjoy seeing the baby on the screen, which is fun but I like to have the information explained to me too)
  • Right, I knew they did that via ultrasound, but I don't THINK she measured folds, unless she just didn't say anything about it (and was also super fast). All the doctor said was that the heartbeat was good, and baby looked fine. They also have me going to an off-site place to do my anatomy scan - I don't really know my ultrasound machines, but I guess theirs isn't equipped for that sort of thing? Maybe it isn't for NT scans either.

I just hit 13w the day of my appointment, and they gave me the bloodwork slip before I saw the doctor, it seemed like the way they routinely do things there (nurses sometimes get that "I've given this spiel a billion times" tone).

Gotchya - I got sent to the main hospital for my NT scan and bloodwork for the same reason (better machines). I thought maybe you had been in the same boat as me - my OB just asked if I wanted to do genetic testing and (since I did) the nurses just scheduled it and handed me paperwork to give them - no mention of what the ultrasound was for (I didn't find out until I was actually in the room asking questions).
