This rolling thing...

Is making bedtime quite a challenge! I have already been in three times to flip him back over. Going down on his back...rolling to tummy. Oh and at 4 am this morning. ..same thing. So...if he were to fall asleep on his tummy, should I leave him like that? Is it safe? He has rolled tummy to back am few times but doesn't do it often.

Re: This rolling thing...

  • If it doesn't bother him I would be ok with it. He should be at a point now that he can lift and turn his head to breathe. Just no more swaddling so he doesn't get stuck

  • He does turn his head and can lift it well. He has never been swaddled so that isn't an issue. I just checked him and he is passed out on his tummy :)
  • My LO losses his shit when he's on his tummy. He has rolled both ways but not consistently and whenever he goes back to tummy all hell breaks loose until you flip him back
  • I would leave him.

  • I thought it was ok to leave them if they roll onto their tummies, but you "aren't supposed" to put them down on their tummies. I could be way off base here though.

I am right there with you except DD rolls all the time. I can't walk away for 5 seconds because then she's screaming because she's on her belly. Well, small one, why do you keep rolling on your belly if you hate being on your belly?!

Everytime I flip him back I tell him he just needs to do the opposite of what he just did. One of these days he'll get it.
  • We have to follow super strict safe sleep rules at my job, (non-profit child care/Head Start & Early Head Start) and we can't lay them on their belly, but if the roll to the belly we can leave them that way.
  • I spoke to my pediatrician about this. I actually admitted that I let her sleep on her tummy And he said....I didn't hear that! But he added that once they start rolling over on their own then it's fine to let them stay on their tummies.
  • I did end up rolling him back last night...but DH and I are finding him sleeping in funny positions. I think he gets tired of laying back on his helmet all night :( He has like his tummy a lot better since getting it. I probably need to go with it. Sometimes he fusses but if he actually falls asleep i should leave him. I also think I would hear him if he was struggling to roll back over in the night.
  • I let DD nap on her belly when she rolled there. She started sucking her thumb too... so cute.

  • Have you tried a magic sleep suit? It's way harder to roll in one-it was designed to keep babies on their backs. But once they can roll in the suit you're supposed to stop wearing it. My LO hasn't rolled in it yet. But I guess if she was comfy on her belly I would let her but would still be nervous!
