Coats and car seats

I was under the impression that coats and car seats were a no no. When we go out, DS wears a hat with a thick blanket covering him up to his neck. We live in PA so winter temps are in the 20-30s range. Several people have commented that the baby should be in a coat or have said things like "where's your coat?!". I've explained about car seat safety but then I get comments like "can't you get a thin material jacket?". What do you guys do? I could buy a cover but DS like to look around and I feel like the covers are more for newborns.

Re: Coats and car seats

  • I use a fleece zip up hoodie for DD that I got at old navy.  I also get the "ohh baby needs a coat" remark (I live in MN), and try and educate them as well about proper car seat safety.

  • Baby has a light fleece jacket (in MN). We don't even put her in it unless it's really cold. Blankets and hat are fine. We aren't leaving her out in the cold!

Hopefully the Polar Vortex doesn't return.

Just use blanket to cover up then shed once the car is warm. If going out for longer in the cold, in -20, I use a fleece suit over a footed pj and add blamkets on too

    Eta: posted too soon
  • We have a fleece zip up that she wears. We also use a fleece car seat cover and a hat. We're in Ohio- it gets pretty cold. She knocks the cover part down- so we have to hold it up if its snowy, rainy, or windy out.

  • We use a cozy cover for the car seat when we are outside. I pull it down in the car and when we go in places (grocery store for example) so she can look around. She also has a light blanket on her lap. We are in MN and people comment how cozy she looks with her cozy cover :)

  • Use a Columbia fleece. If he's in an infant seat a shower cap type cove/blanket. From the san diegan. Who's a car seat safety freak.

  • Neither of my kids wear jackets in the car. They wear a wool sweater, hat and I cover them with a blanket. People who don't have kids (or who had kids 30years ago) have no idea about car seat safety, so ignore the comments. My mom still yells at me every single time about the kids not wearing a jacket.

  • Look up car seat ponchos.

    You're welcome.

FWIW I dress my son in a fleece sweater and pants with a long sleeve and leg warmers under. Use the poncho to throw on for in and out of the car. He wears a hat and Stonz boots. If he goes into the stroller there's a fuzzy fleece snuggle bag. I have an extra cost and snow pants for colder days or emergencies.

I try to park in a covered parking if I can to avoid the wind.
  • We layer fleece pants and fleece zip-up hoodie over her clothes, then use a couple of blankets over top. She has a fleece hat and mittens, plus boots as well.

  • They have car seat covers that are elastic and go over the whole seat and there is a little flap so just the head can peek out or can be closed. Much better so baby can look around.
  • He wears a jacket that's fleece lined, but jacket material outside, but it's lighter than a winter jacket. I'm not sure if it's far seat approved. I'll have to better look into it. I knew he wasn't supposed to wear a big bulky jacket nj the car seat, but that's all I know. He wears a hat, mittens and we have a heavy blanket, too. We need it in NJ!
  • We live in Wisconsin, so it gets pretty cold here. I've gotten in the habit of warming up the car before we go anywhere. Otherwise he just goes in the car seat in his normal outfit with a hat, mitts, and fleece blanket over top. When it gets really cold (sub zero) we will add a thin fleece jacket. I also keep a snow suit in the car in case of emergency.
  • I use a thin hoodie with Jake.

My mom freaks because the kids are clearly going to die from lack of coats.

I'd rather a cold baby than the alternative. There are always comments floating around on my local fb group. Some flame mom's for their babies being cold. Then they flame back for being unsafe.

Adjust the straps to fit him when he's dressed normally. Then put on the jacket and try strapping him in again. If you can do it without needing to loosen the straps, it's ok.

  • Light sweatshirt jacket for DS; fleece for DD. DS gets a blanket tucked in around him and one draped over the carseat too. I also get comments from people. Argh!

  • We do a thin fleece hoodie when it's really cold, a hat, and fleece booties. I put a warm blanket on too depending in where we are going. I have heard north face jackets are great for being warm and thin, but I will prob wait until next year to buy him one, since he will be older and out of the bucket seat.

  • PS just like when we were pregnant, people, generally, are dicks. I have gotten "you brought the baby out in THIS???" When it was raining, and also someone said I was spoiling my son bc I was wearing him in a carrier. Kindly GFY, people.

  • @spacepotatoes‌ thanks! Yes, the jacket fits properly.
  • I'm annoyed by the comments especially by family. The worst is after I've already explained the car seat thing. Most of the time I get DS out of the seat and he is covered in sweat.

DS actually prefers no jacket. When is put him in with his rain coat he'd flip.

He generally just hates clothes. Less is more with him.
  • I live in Alaska 20 below is the norm. L goes out in Columbia fleece over her clothes. From what I understood if you don't have to adjust the straps to fit the coat then it's ok.

We just switched DS into the convertible seat, and I already have the fabric here to make a poncho. Awesome. But for now he wears a fleece jacket, hat, and Robeez boots. he's a little furnace so I worry he's too hot in the car if we're going anywhere longer than 20 mins or so in the car! If its really cold I have a blanket in the car too.

  • I put DD in a jacket and we also have a car seat cover that zips up and keeps her warm when she isnt pulling it down.
