When to shop for baby

First time mom asking those who have done this before when they started shopping, or when they would recommend shopping for baby things? It's tempting to buy things now with all the holiday sales going on but I have stopped myself since June is still pretty far away. Any suggestions for timing, great stores or websites is much appreciated! Thanks:)

Re: When to shop for baby

  • Babies r us and toys r us usually have a big sale at the end of January.

  • I've already been buying stuff.  I won't buy sex-specific stuff until I find out, obviously, but I've already been stocking up on diapers/wipes and I've purchased essential stuff like a crib mattress, baby tub, etc.  I buy my stuff off Amazon because I am a Prime member.  I prefer to spread the cost of all the baby stuff over the course of 9 months instead of all at once.

  • I bought things as I saw them on sale. We bought the big things like a crib and book shelf. If you are having a shower (or showers), I would wait to buy a lot of stuff until after them, because you may need/want to take some things back and get GCs which could help out financially, plus saves a trip to the store. I know it is exciting and hard to wait, but you don't have to buy everything right away. Plus most registires will give you a discount right before/after you are due.

Iin fact the only things you really need right away is a car seat and diapers

  • I waited until after my showers.  The only thing we bought prior was the bedding.  Our crib and changing table were hand-me-downs.

  • I bought a car seat and stroller. Will purchase a crib soon, trying to get some big items out of the way.
  • Wait until after a shower for cute clothes and registry stuff.  I plan on waiting until I know the sex.  For items like strollers/travel systems that you'll use with subsequent kids and plan to buy unisex, keep an eye out for sales now.  Try to have all your necessary shopping done by 8 months, in the event the baby is early.  Of course if your baby is late, having some errands to run may help keep you sane, so no telling.

  • President's Day tends to have a lot of baby-related items on sale, so I'm waiting until then to purchase most items.  I know a lot of people say to wait for your shower and put items on your registry, but one thing to keep in mind is that people have certain price points, so if you really want a specific item and it's expensive, I would keep your eye out for a good sale rather than waiting and hoping someone will buy it for you.  I can't imagine putting a crib or stroller on my registry simply because I don't think people are going to pay that much for a gift.
  • When planning my wedding, I found to always put everything I wanted on my registry, even things I planned on buying on my own.  Completion discounts and "points back" make it worth it.  So, no, I wouldn't expect someone to buy me something pricey on my registry, but I might as well get points/money off.  I don't really side-eye anything on registries for that reason.

  • I've been know to go in together on a pricier gift with other friends for someone because you know it is something they really need like a stroller so ya just never know. I'd put everything on the registry that you can.

  • We're moving in April so I'm waiting until then. Also, I want to find out what is actually necessary versus clutter because why waste money that could go to college savings!
  • Yeah, I'm putting expensive things on my registry, I'd be shocked if I got them, but 20% off! That's a significant amount off a $400 item or whatever.
  • We havent bought anything yet but seeing as DH's parents are divorced they are already claiming what they want to buy.. my MIL the nursery furniture...my FIL the stroller (which is fine because Dh really wants the 4moms stroller which is close to $1000) and seeing how much his father has been an asshole to me and my parents through the last 6 years i am 100% fine with him spending that much money on a stroller!

  • I can't really remember when we started shopping for DD, but we have already bought a couple things for new baby (silly things, we bought an infant Canucks hat and a cow onesie that I thought was cute lol) and once we find out the sex will probably start getting more serious.

If it's a boy we're going to have a lot more things to buy so like pp's said, I'd like to spread it over 9 months rather than cramming it all into a short period before baby arrives.
  • We're waiting until after the baby shower (probably in April). But, I have been watching for a few items on Craigslist (like the crib I want) and if I find them for a good price, I'll go ahead and get them now.
  • I suggest buying things as you see them on sale if you can afford it (especially at this stage, then you'll know what not to register for later). It's a better option than waiting and having to buy everything at once, not catching things on sale. :)
  • I already made my registry with items I know we'll have to get ourselves but we already know the gender so I think after Christmas we'll begin buying the bigger stuff then wait on everything else until the shower. It's all up to you, a few of the stuff we wanted they no longer sell so we went with our second choice so now we're jumping on the ball before anything else we want is no longer there.
  • I bought stuff before I got pregnant. I have been buying a few items every month especially for the nursery. We are doing a koala theme so its going to be hard to ask friends to buy them online. I am trying to buy bigger ticket items a little at a time so it won't be as much of a shock to our bank account.
  • I've been picking lil stuff up at thrift stores such as clothes and blankets. :]
