Nursing in the car?!!

In preparation for our 8 hour car ride I've asked a few friends if they stopped to nurse or brought bottles. Two friends said they nursed in the car/backseat. Not taking the baby out of the carseat but leaning over baby.

How, just how? Anyone do this?

Re: Nursing in the car?!!

  • Lol, no.  That sounds really awkward and uncomfortable for everyone involved.

We stopped to nurse on our long trip.  It's nice to get LO out of the car seat for a while too.  I brought emergency bottles, but we never needed them; she slept most of the time.

  • Uh...idk how they were able to nurse like that...I'd just pull over and nurse or give babya bottle if they'll take it

  • No! People do it but it is so dangerous. If you got in an accident you would both be seriously hurt. I think there was an episode of the Kardashians where Kourtney did it. Such a bad idea. Stop to feed baby. You will all probably need a break anyway. Get out and stretch for a few minutes, feed baby, and get back on the road.

  • Giant boobs? I would just pull over and let LO get a good feed that way you know he's not hungry if crying starts from the backseat.

That's the thing...both these friends are like b cups. They are both fit though so maybe slightly acrobatic?

I'm bring pumped milk and my portable pump for the car. If she won't take a bottle we'll pull over.

  • We just did a 5 hour trip. Nursing in the car would be ridiculous and only if you're a contortionist. LOL. We brought bottles and stopped to nurse/potty break once. You'll have to stop anyway to pee. :)
  • Okay, I have done that out of desperation before. She sits on the right side of the car so I had to use the right boob and it was awkward. I have a Medela Swing pump. I use it every long trip. Pump into bottle, feed baby, and repeat.

  • Didn't a Kardashian do this?

Anyway, that would not be physically possible for me.

  • We stopped a few times on our long drive for Thanksgiving to bf her in the car and change her diaper. Also it was nice for her to get out of the car seat and stretch a bit.

  • Feeding in their seat requires you to unbuckle and lean over them.  Totally not safe.  Our cars don't move without everyone buckled in.  In reality, you shouldn't feed a bottle while they are in their seats either, as you can't quickly sit them up or turn them if they choke.

I looked into options when we were planning a long road trip a few months ago.  We have found that we need to stop more often that babies do in the car, so we feed during one of our pit stops.

  • I have thought about this before, but I don't think it's physically possible for me.

  • I did it once when we were stuck in a traffic jam on the highway and DS was completely melting down. We were creeping along or stopped and I decided it was safer than taking him out (nowhere to pull over). But it was crazy uncomfortable...I'm a B cup.
  • I've done it.  DD was still rearfacing and in the middle.  I would unbuckle and lean over.  It was very uncomfortable and my side would hurt from pressing on the car seat.  I just did it on road trips.  Now with 2 carseats in the back, this wouldn't happen.  Oh and we FF DD2 so I guess there isn't a need to do it anyways.

  • LO was having a meltdown in the car $ DH jokingly said, lean over and pop your boob in his mouth. Joking. I didn't know this was a real thing!? Whyyy? Where are you going in such a hurry? Pull over. Also, I wouldn't give a bottle in the car seat. My LO has to be burped. And like others said, what if he chokes?
  • Hehehe this visual makes me chuckle. My H and I joked about this on our road trip to Thanksgiving festivities. Id never actually do it because taking the 20 minutes to stop and feed in a way that's much more comfortable for both of us sounds like a much better idea IMO

Guilty. 9 hour car ride, bumper to bumper traffic, meltdown. It was the only way to save everyone's sanity.

This is basically me too.  I did it once.  She was still buckled in, and so was I, I just leaned forward into her car seat so she would quiet down from her meltdown.  But other than that we always stop and feed her on long car rides so she gets a break from the car seat.

Boob over the side of the carseat is only in case of emergency.

  • So those that have done it...what type of cars do you have? I feel like I would need to be on my knees in our tiny car.

  • We had a 2007 Honda CR-V at the time.

  • We stopped to nurse and I also brought my pump in case I needed to pump and give a bottle.

  • I pump in the car regularly but have never nursed. I have given a bottle once or twice but only because we could not stop.
  • Just pump and feed baby with a bottle. Use the battery pack for the pump and just sit in te back seat with them.
  • Um not taking the kid out of the car seat? I can't even understand the physics of this feat! But I have taken baby out of the seat and nursed in the car during a long drive. Not while driving, obviously. ;)

I know! I should have asked one of my friends to demonstrate!

    I did find this....

  • We have a converter for our car.. So we can plug the pump in, in the car. So I pump in the backseat while giving the baby a bottle while hubby is driving. I'm a multitasking MVP.
  • We just got back from a 6 hour trip yesterday.  We stopped twice to nurse.  It worked out great because LO needed a chance to stretch and look around at new scenery and I had to pee. The only way I can imagine nursing in the car is if we were stuck in a traffic jam and LO was screaming because she was hungry.
