If you've been to Maui, give me your tips please!

My parents are taking DH, DD & I to Maui over NYE and I cannot be more excited!  We have never been there, and DD is 4.  I am looking for traveling tips with  a young child and tips for things to do that are kid friendly while we are there. We are flying to Arizona on sunday, the 28th and staying there till tuesday the 30th.  Then flying to Maui on the 30th and will be there till jan 6th.  We were thinking breaking up the trip there might help DD.  On the way back, however, our flight leaves Maui at 10:30 pm and we fly all night and get back home at 3pm.  What do you recommend to help small children with ear popping?  Like I said, any tips for travel and for Maui itself would be greatly appreciated! TIA

  • So, is it tank top weather there now?  How chilly does it get in the evenings?  Mom booked us a dinner cruise, whale watching and a luau already.  I am DEFINITELY going to tell her about the submarine.  That souinds great!  So many people have told me to do the road to Hana, but I am just thinking that might not be a good thing with a 4 year old. Was this your first time there?

I've been to Maui a number of times, I'll be back in the spring. It's my happy place. What part of Maui are you staying in? I have a running list of recommendations that has been sent to everyone over the years, I'm happy to send it to you.

Thanks!  That would be wonderful!  We are staying at the Kaanapali Beach club?

  • Sounds AMAZING!  Yea, im in the colder climate too (in the 30's).  So I am excited for warmer weather.  I dont think DD would do much hiking.  We would probably end up carrying her most of the time.

  • Did you have trouble with motion sickness at all?  I get motion sickness pretty easily and someone said with all the sharp curves, it could be a problem for kids and for me.  I do have motion sickness pills I can take before though.

  • We went there a few years ago, and will be going back in September. We really liked the Aquarium, Haleakala was stunning at sunrise. If you are up for driving and exploring the island, the road to Hana is really nice. Bring your swimsuits because there are a ton of natural hot springs along the road, and bring money because the fruit stands are amazing. We loved the town of Pa'ia. If you want to shop, whalers village is a nice outdoor shopping area, with lots of high end stores.

Also, the Honolulu cookie company makes amazing cookies. I eat atleast 30Ibs of them when we go.
