Rear-Facing Question

@asmallwonder :)

Do you need to worry about the straps coming from too far below the child's shoulders? DD's on the highest slot allowed for RF with her seat (SureRide), but the straps are already about 2 inches below her shoulder. I wanted to post of CSFTL, but FB is blocked at work :(.

  • There's no such thing as too low for rear facing.  That said, the Sureride doesn't stipulate that you can only use certain slots for rear facing.  The only requirements for rear facing in that seat are that the child is under 40 pounds and that they have at least 1" of shell above their heads :)

    I'm 99% sure my manual said you can only the bottom 3 slots for rear facing. There was a 4th slot that was OK for rear facing, but only in the US, still can't figure that one out.

  • Oh wait, Canada.  Not my area of expertise lol  I trust that you know what your manual says lol  There are other seats out there (in the US) that have that stipulation so I was just making sure you hadn't gotten it mixed up with another seat you may have.

    Ok so that said, really low is still ok, as long as the straps aren't falling off the shoulder.

  • Yup :(  I'm sure Canada is lovely but you guys get a raw deal when it comes to car seats lol  Do you need me to poll my people and find out what your options are to keep him rear facing?
    We still have enough slack in the harness that its not causing a problem yet, I was just worrying that there might be something unsafe about the slot being so far below her shoulders. I was ignoring my worries until a friend just asked me the same question lol.

    Maybe your people will know some secret about how we are actually allowed to use the 4th slot?

  • LOL you really can't.  Canada has their own testing and for whatever reason, it was determined you couldn't use it and we don't know why.  Kiddos generally gain 1" of torso growth in a year so as long as you have slack, you should make it to two :)

    I had this same problem with the Sureride and asked on the CSFL page last year.

    Basically, as said, as long as the straps aren't actually slipping off the shoulders you are good to go. They also said this was quite rarely a problem with this particular seat because the straps are very narrowly set.
    @sympkin I was thinking this.
