Calcium Deposit in Baby's Heart?

We are 19 weeks pregnant and found out this week that we are expecting a baby girl and we're absolutely thrilled. The ultrasound revealed a calcium deposit in her heart (an intracardiac echogenic focus). They also said both of her feet are clubbed. I am trying so hard to keep my chin up and not stress about it, but I'm dying inside. The ultrasound tech was struggling to get a good look at everything and said our baby wasn't cooperationg, so I'm hoping they just didn't get a good enough look. I have a follow up ultrasound in two weeks and am praying everything turns out ok. This is our first child and I'm wondering if anyone else experienced this?

  • FX for you..I don't have any experience with this but I also had a less than perfect ultrasound at 20 weeks and it can be nerve wracking. I'm sure everything will turn out OK
  • My anatomy scan showed this as well, in addition to a cyst on the brain. My doctor said that they are both very loose markers for Down syndrome or trisomy 18, but not to worry since I had the panorama which was all low risk. Hopefully your next ultrasound will show that it cleared up, which my doctor said they often do (although they don't cause any harm to baby if it sticks around). Have you thought about getting a blood test like panorama or maternit21 done? That might give you some more peace of mind.

  • Thinking of you.  I also had a possible issue at my scan, and it is very nerve wracking!  FX corssed your next ultrasound shows improvement.

  • Thank you guys so much for the support and good vibes. I am going,g to wait until the next ultrasound and if the results are the same, I am planning on having my blood work done to determine whether or not it might be downs. Either way I'm still overjoyed and can't wait to meet her! You guys are awesome!
  • Like some others said, they found 2 IEFs on our girls heart. Waiting for the harmony test results to come back. They also couldn't get all the views of the heart they needed so we have a follow up scan in a month. :/ Hopefully everything will be alright, but it's hard waiting.

Praying everything will be okay for your little one.
  • Sending positive vibes your way.

  • *lurking from June 2015* my niece had an IEF on her heart as WELL and turned out PERFECT. My sister wasn't offered early testing and the tests like materni21 etc. Weren't offered, but she saw many specialists during her pregnancy and the IEF resolved on its own. :) thinking of you hun, seems we've all had a worry or a scare at some point! Best wishes!

  • Back in to say that our scan revealed an EIF as well. The dr said not to be concerned as our blood test had come back with low risk. She said we would have another ultra sound in two months as a follow up.

  • Copilot... I know it's nerve wrecking, but if your doctor's telling you not to be concerned that's a good sign. Its when they ARE concerned that it gets really scary. Praying for you. We don't have our follow up for another week :/
  • My best friend's baby had a calcium deposit in his heart at the anatomy scan. It cleared up and he's a perfectly healthy 2-year-old. I hope your next scan shows some improvement.

  • UPDATE!! We had our follow up appointment this past Friday and found out that the calcium deposit (echogenic) is gone and the doctors see no cause for alarm! Our little miss does have both clubbed feet but the doctors are pleased with her growth and everything else points to a healthy baby girl. They want me to try for a natural birth, however... Due to the marginal cord insertion, they're gonna keep an eye on it and when the time comes they may induce me early or schedule a c section. I couldn't be happier with our follow up appointment! Thank you all so much for your well wishes and prayers! They worked!!
  • Congrats!
