I usually don't make special snowflake threads, but... (thyroid issue)

Could use some T&P.  OB's office called today saying that I need to make an appointment with an endocrinologist because my TSH is still low (0.1, down a hair from 0.11 about 7 weeks ago).  My free T4 is 1.06, which is in the normal range, and everything I've read online seems to say that I'll be ok, but I'm still nervous over here. The nurse said that the doctor doesn't give referrals unless she's concerned.  I have to wait until the 29th for an appointment... guess I'll be doing some deep breathing until then.  I know thyroid issues are fairly common in pregnancy, so any positive outcome stories are welcome too.

I got put on a low dose of synthoid after my 8 week checkup, .025mg. I was just a little off for someone who is pregnant. She didn't recheck at my 12 week, but I she will at my next one. I think I was at a 4.5 and she wants me at at least a 3.5. I've never had thyroid issues, so not all of the numbers really make sense to me as far as what they are and where they should be. I'm curious to see if there's been any improvement, though. I don't feel any different most of the time.

EDA: I'll definitely keep you in my thoughts, though.

  • I had the opposite problem...

I discovered that my TSH was high (over 5) the same month I conceived. My T4 levels were fine though so I think they caught my issues early. They put me on 50mcg of synthroid and within a month I was down to about 2.3. My office said they like pregnant women to be below 2.5. They are monitoring my TSH and testing me every 8 weeks or so.

Everything was handled within my obgyn office though. Are they referring you to an Endo because they don't normally deal with thyroid issues?

  • I have hashimotos hypothyroidism and I take 50 mcg every morning to control my thyroid levels. As long as you keep up with any meds they may give you everything should be great. My endo has me do blood draws monthly while I am pregnant. If you do find that you need to take meds, it's common for the dosage to go up as you progress. After 20 weeks I will be having an ultrasound every 6 weeks yo make sure growth is on track. Best of luck to you!
  • Thanks for the thoughts ladies! Good news - the endo office called me back and said they have a 10:30am appointment that opened up tomorrow, so I took it. I hate to miss another day of work, but it's better than worrying through Christmas.

@oohsparkly13 I'm guessing she doesn't feel she knows enough about it to make a call on what to do - probably just covering her butt. I'm really praying that this will just result in more blood checking and no medication. I've never had thyroid issues in the past, so this is all new and weird to me - especially having an overactive thyroid (I have never been able to eat this much without gaining weight in my life)

Keep us posted. I wonder if your endo might put you on a low dose of methimazole. I was on that for years before I had radioactive iodine treatment. It controlled it enough to get me through a few years. I've had thyroid (both hyper and hypo) issues my whole life, so I know it can be freaky. Let us know how it goes tomorrow.

Edited because...I just forgot like six words.

  • Great that you got the appointment tomorrow :) now try to get a good sleep and stay positive!
  • I don't know much about thyroid problems. I only know that I've had friends who had thyroid issues during pregnancy, and everything turned out fine. I hope all is well for you. It's awesome that you got an earlier appointment. The waiting would drive me crazy, too.
  • I hope everything turns out okay, but most likely your doctor's just being proactive.

  • Similar to what PPs have said, I wouldn't be overly worried. It's just a precaution that your OB referred you to an endocrinologist - mine did the same before we started TTC because my thyroid "felt enlarged" at one of my annual visits. The endo put me on Synthroid and got me in the ideal range for pregnancy before giving us the green light to TTC. Now that I'm pregnant my levels are going back up (monitoring monthly) so my dose is getting adjusted a bit higher each month. No big deal and like others have mentioned, I don't feel any different one way or another.

Hopefully you'll get your levels regulated and you'll be just fine!

  • My appointment went well today... the endo I saw was so sweet, I wish she was my regular doctor!  She agreed with me that my OB was probably just trying to cover her butt, and said for now we'll just do more in-depth thyroid panels every 2 weeks to make sure things aren't getting worse, but everything will likely be fine. Happy to have this peace of mind before the holidays.

They treated your hyperthyroidism with synthroid? Very odd as levothyroxine is to supplement thyroid levels (hypothyroidism or in some situation graves disease). typically for hyperthyroidism - it is methimazole/tapazole

    I have hypothyroidism...not hyperthyroidism.
