TTC After a Loss

How far would you ladies travel for an OBGYN you liked?

In a nut shell, I am currently unhappy with my OBGYN after my ectopic pregnancy. At my last exam 2 weeks ago, which was like 5 months after my loss, I told him I was pretty sure I wasn't ovulating ever since I took methotrexate and that I was very concerned. He kinda blew off my claim and that was it, just shuffled me out of there to get to the next patient. Not to mention I really was unhappy with the way the hospital in my area treated me during my loss and I started thinking about if I ever got pregnant again how much I don't want to go back there. I have found a new doctor who is about 45 minutes away in PA and I was wondering if any of you travel that far?

Re: How far would you ladies travel for an OBGYN you liked?

  • I do not travel that far, but I absolutely would without a doubt.  I think I would travel up to an hour to see a Dr that I truly trusted and felt would give me the best care.
We met in middle school. We got married 15 years later in a February blizzard of 2010.

  • Thanks ladies!  I just didn't know what people considered "far" and I feel better now. I think I will call this new doctor tomorrow.

  • I think 45 minutes is reasonable, but keep in mind that when you have a full term pregnancy you go to appointments, monthly, every two weeks, and eventually weekly (or more). I'm not sure if you work, but will your schedule allow for this? If so I think it's fine.

This. I travel almost an hour for my RE. I dont really think 45 minutes is all that far

  • 100% agree it's not too far. Definitely leave that doctor if he makes you uncomfortable.

  • My OB is 1.5hrs away. He's the dr I've seen since college and have just never changed. It wasn't a big deal when I was just going once a year for my checkup. It is a slight inconvenience now, but he knows my entire history, which makes me hesitant to change.

  • I drive 30 minutes to my RE and 35 to my OB. It is worth the distance if you trust and like your provider.

  • I say go for it! I've switched to an OB who is 35 miles away... So is the new hospital. Hopefully my first appointment will be good and I'll feel good about it!

Good for you for seeking out something more comfortable! I hope it works out well.

  • I would definitely. I drive 30-60 for my RE and it's worth it. Having a dr you trust is worth it as long as you can make the drive further along as Sterling points out

  • I agree with the others about it not being too far and I would do it. As long as your work schedule would allow it when you have to have more appointments, like Sterling13 already mentioned.

I hope if you make the decision to change that you like the new one better!
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

    Edited for punctuation.

I will most likely end up traveling 2 hours. I was treated like shit at the hospital I went to when we first got here and REFUSE to go there again! So really the best option is 2 hours away. Small town problems :/

  • Definitely not too far - I used to drive about an hour to see my doc before he retired.

  • Okay, so I'm going to sound like a total insane person here, but I drive 5 hours to see mine...
I'm currently 'living' in 2 states, one of which is my 'home' and the other where I work for the next year and a half. I've had the same obgyn since I was 17 and think she's amazing...so I go see her for my annuals / D&C.
Since moving here though, and she's very aware of long long we've been TTC and having issues, she advised that if I get KU, to find another obgyn here for regular check ups and then accidentally "be on vacation" in my home state when I'm close to delivering,  so that she could still deliver my baby. I know this sounds insane, but I'm just so comfortable with her and am willing to drive...

  • I have to travel 120 miles for my OBGYN. I wouldn't even think of using someone else!

  • The right doctor makes all the difference in the world. In a heartbeat, I'd travel 45 minutes to see someone I trusted and felt comfortable with. GL!
  • I absolutely would for a better dr than that! I think 1 hr would be my max though.
Have you been temping at all? that could show a dr that you are/arent ovulating.

I should be but im not. Prior to my ectopic I knew exactly when I was ovulating. I had heavy CM, spotting and cramping. Then after I lost my pregnancy I haven't had any of that. Its like, I just know something is wrong.

Followup to my post. Turns out after reading reviews, the doc that was 45 min away I thought was good isn't so good after all. I feel frustrated. I had bloodwork done almost 3 weeks ago and my current doctor never even called me to tell me if everything was ok. Even if it was, I still should get a damn phonecall! I think I am going to go see my old OBGYN who is 2 hours away who I had my whole life in the mean time to just to talk to her. Hopefully I can find someone else who is closer. Its a shame because the hospital now is 5 min from my house. They just treated me so poorly when I lost my pregnancy. I didn't want sympathy or a pity party, but the way they talked to me you would have thought I was there for like a splinter in my foot. Sorry for the rant, its just really stressing me out to be going through this on top of having trouble TTC.
