Incompetent Cervix

I just had my first trimester ultrasound (13 weeks).  The sonogram technician measured my cervix and said it was measuring a little short.  She did a transvaginal ultrasound to get a better measurement and it was measuring between 1.76 and 2.01 cm.  At my dating sonogram (dated at 8 weeks 1 day), my cervix measured fine.  And my previous pregnancy (my daughter is now almost 14 months) was never an issue.  I delivered my daughter at 38 weeks 6 days healthy.  My doctor came in and said "you have to have a cerclage put in today or tomorrow."  Needless to say, we are a bit overwhelmed and trying to understand everything that is happening.  She said that the success rate is very good and they will remove the stitches at 36 or 37 weeks and allow the rest to happen naturally.  I'm wondering what others experience was, especially if getting it this early.  They kept stressing that it was good that it was caught this early, but everything happened so fast and we're finally finding some time to take it in.  Thanks for any advice and reassurance!

Re: Incompetent Cervix

  • No experience yet, but I'll be getting a cerclage placed in 4 weeks, myself. I delivered my twins at 29w5d due to pPROM (my cervix started shortening at 26w).

Most cerclages are placed right around 12-14w, if they're able to catch it that early. So, while this is obviously no fun, it's great they caught this early -- and there's still time to intervene.

I have a short cervix but they didn't catch it until it was too late for a cerclage. So I was on strict bed rest for 2 weeks and am on modified bed rest now. We're almost 28 weeks and with progesterone treatments it looks likely that she'll stay til 32-34 weeks at the very least.

Had I been able to get a cerclage my odds would be much better so it's a good thing that they're putting it in for you! Also know that there are more options in addition to the cerclage that will help the LO stay :)
  • Thank you all so much! It all just happened so fast! We were expecting them to say "come back in a week or so and check it again" and instead it was "surgery. Tomorrow". I had the procedure done Tuesday morning. I'm back at work and they said take it easy for a week and not to lift my daughter. After that I can pretty much go back to normal routine. I just have some slight bleeding, but very hopeful that this will keep baby in! I'd rather go through this than a 2nd trimester miscarriage or very early term labor. Crossing my fingers that it's smooth from here in out!

  • No experience with this, but this was always an option for me as we were worried about my cervix (that we never had to use).  But I did want to stop by and wish you luck.  My OB and MFM explained to me that if I ever had to get one, it had a high sucess rate.
  • Thank you for your thoughts! I'm just reminding myself to take it day by day and week by week :)
