Cloth Diapering

Cleaning diapers while traveling

We are visiting my family for about 10 days starting this Saturday. I've washed diapers there before no problem, but that was before she was on solids. I pretty much rely on my sprayer at home, but we won't have one there. What is the best way to clean off diapers while out of town? I will probably have to wash at least three times while there, and my daughter is a multiple times per day pooper.

Dunk, swish, scrape. A cheap spatula works well. I just wrap it up in a plastic bag when I pack it.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'd vote liners, if you can get them in time.
  • Ooh, I actually have some liners left over from last year when we had a bad rash. I will try that, though I'm not sure I have enough for the whole trip. Peri bottle is another great idea I never thought of!

Can someone explain exactly how to do the dunk and swish? I feel like I need a video...

I kind of swished swished, then used the side of the toilet like a washboard and flushed to get a little extra action (works better with high flow than low flow toilets). And I washed my hands when I was done.
It doesn't get the toilet all gross? I don't even know how I cleaned my toilet before I had the sprayer...

  • After removing all the big bits and as much as I possibly can in the toilet, I have rinsed the remaining stubborn bits in the sink and then washed hands and sink. (My dh won't complain since I have seen him do that too)

  • I've heard of people washing and reusing liners. If you don't have enough, that's an option.

  • Another vote for liners.  We have to use them for daycare, so I always have some around.  I wash and reuse liners that have only been peed on.  The real nappies brand ones I have get another 2 uses out of them that way.  I had a roll of what I think was bummis (not sure, it was along with some craigslist diapers and didn't have a label), and I could wash and reuse those at least once.

Can I hijack the thread with a random question that I don't really need to worry about for 4-5 more months? What about camping, anyone ever CDed while camping? Would it be dumb and crazy? I can't help myself I'm just so excited to go hang out in the red rocks in the springtime.

We have, but it was at the cleanest campsite in the world, which had running water, flush toilets, hot showers, and a couple of coin-op laundry machines. I could swear the camp staff cleaned the toilets several times a day, because they were always immaculate. It wasn't any different than any other travel CD'ing we've done. (I think the British have a different concept of camping than Americans do)

Yeah we are definitely the  prefer not to see other humans the whole time, might get a chance to rinse off in river, bring all of our water in jugs, etc. type of campers.

I associate not seeing other people type of camping with hiking in someplace to where I might not want to carry much water, just as a weight consideration. Wouldn't a few bottles with a filter you could use to treat water make more sense? And no need to treat water used for laundry.

For CD while camping like that I would probably use flats and covers, hand wash in the morning and hang them on a line to dry during the day. Probably less to carry than packing sposies in and out.

I second the flats and covers. You can also use a DIY camp-style washer (5-gallon bucket with plunger) which would be really helpful
