Panorama/Mat21?

I had my "intake" appointment with a nurse tonight and she mentioned the reps for Panorama visited and were basically waiving the copay for Panorama for low risk moms...it would cost me $25 OOP for the lab fee and they would pay the rest.

Is there any reason not to do it? This would replace the sequential screen, and they said it has 99%+ accuracy for downs, t18 and t21. I can't think of a reason to not do it!

Thoughts? Anyone had it done or planning to?

Re: Panorama/Mat21?

  • If it was that cheap I'd go for it. My OB said it would be $500-$800 OOP for us, so we didn't even consider it.

Yeah that was my thought. For $25 I figure i have nothing to lose!

Bonus is that we can share the sex with our family at Christmas :)

I would do it in a heartbeat if it was offered to me. My doctor didn't even mention it, and since I'm low risk I've been assuming my insurance wouldn't cover the cost. But having to wait for weeks to get the first trimester screen, which isn't even super accurate, is pretty nerve wracking. I would love to have been able to do a blood test as early as last week and have results before I'd even be able to do the first trimester screen. If I'd known a bit more about it before my first appointment I would have asked about it and done more research to see if I could get it covered. Next time!

  • @petrichor14‌ - I did ask about it to see how much it would be without going through insurance since I knew I wouldn't qualify. The nurse didn't mention it on her own.

  • Unrelated but it is Down syndrome or DS. "Downs" is not a thing.

    /soapbox

For $25 and really no risk, I would totally do it! I hope they're at my office!

  • There is no risk. They just take blood the way you've had blood taken 100x times already. It's very accurate.

I had it with my son last year and will do it again this time.

Not to be argumentative, I swear, but I work with someone with a 2 year old daughter with DS. He refers to things using just "Downs" all the time. A few weeks ago, he was talking about something and said, "yeah, Downs kids usually have that problem." I honestly just remember it because I have always thought it sounds odd when he says it. I think because I am used to people where I live referring to Churchill Downs by shortening it to "Downs."

Not saying you're wrong and he's right by any means, just saying that I understand where other people get the notion to say that.

  • That sounds like an awesome deal! I would do it for sure.

I'm in Canada, and if I want to do the NIPT (I'm lookign at Verifi currently), it looks like it's going to cost me over $1200. I'm still considering it, even though that's (for me) a pretty huge bill.

  • I told my dr I wanted all standard screenings... well, she wants me to see a perinatologist anyhow to determine if I'm high risk (there is a chance I may be) so she is having me do it all at the same time. I still need to make my appt but I'll be doing it towards the end of the month/beginning of january.
  • Yikes, I went and read the Jezebel article and totally agree with you- inflammatory and I don't think very well researched.

I thought it was a given that these tests were NOT considered diagnostic- they're a screening tool, just like an NT scan. And, while supposedly more accurate (though maybe that's debatable) they're not 100% and not meant as a substitute for a diagnostic procedure like CVS or amnio. They're a screening tool to determine whether you should go on to have the more invasive procedure or whether you're probably ok skipping it. Right? Are people being led to believe otherwise?

What moron schedules their abortion for the next day after getting screening results back, anyway? Did her doctor not explain the limitations of the test? Did she not do any research? I honestly have trouble believing that that even happened. It just doesn't make sense to me.

  • We're probably not doing it after reading some things in independent reviews of their accuracy. It appears that negative results are about 99% accurate but if you get a positive only about half of those are correct. We would not abort regardless and I'm really not ok with that high a percentage of false positives. So it seems like a pretty big gamble to me. We could get a negative and some peace of mind or we could get a positive and have a 50/50 chance of worrying about it the rest of the pregnancy for no reason. I'm not getting an amnio under any circumstances because of the risk of miscarriage and with this pregnancy coming after three early losses I'm not willing to risk a potentially healthy pregnancy for an earlier diagnosis so we wouldn't get definite confirmation until the birth anyway. I understand if other people still feel the tests are worth it but those are the reasons we've decided to opt out.
  • What's the typical gestation that they do it? I asked for it, and won't be having it done til almost 19 weeks?

They can do it as early as 9 weeks. I had mine drawn at about 10.5.

It depends on which test you're doing.  Apparently the new one that my office is offering does not have that high of a false positive rate - she mentioned that the others do have higher rates.

  • trying to learn more about MaterniT 21.
Just wondering...  Does anybody who has been offered MaterniT 21 have Kaiser?  I'll be able to ask questions once I finally get my genetic counseling appointment, but trying to find out ahead of time if this might even be an option to me under Kaiser.

  • I just had my bloodwork taken for NIPT yesterday (the results get sent to Verifi). Becasue I am 35, there was no cost to me OOP with my insurance and I am having an NT scan on Jan 5th. So funny how the different insurance cos and doctor's offices have different policies and standards on these things.

  • I jut had an application sent off today for Panorama. I live in Ontario Canada and for anyone here interested in knowing, OHIP covers it if you are over 40yo, tested positive on IPS, or if you have an x-linked chromosomal disorder (lucky me...). Outside of that the test is about $795+tax in US dollars. The blood sample is sent to the U.S.

I hate that I qualify or this, but I feel blessed I have the opportunity to take advantage of this test. It will give me more information to go on before I have to make a decision about amino.

  • thiscoffeechick, last time around I had to go to another office and they did the MaterniT21.  This time (18 months later) my doctor's office is now doing the Verifi test.  I called the Verifi people and they said even though Cigna doesn't cover it, the test will only be $25 due to my doctor referring me to the test.  As far as I know they are both the same tests....

  • I see a lot of people comparing locations and insurance. Please remember that while you may have the same insurance company and live in the same area, it doesn't mean your coverage is the same! There are numerous plans out there and some companies pay extra to have additional items covered. What may be covered for the same insurance in the same area for one person may not hold true for another. Your best bet is to always contact your insurance company directly and ask if you are concerned.
  • If your insurance doesn't carry a test you want, call the pharmaceutical company. Many have access plans to help you pay for it at a reduced cost. I was able to pay for the Harmony test this way with my first. Instead of $800 it was $200.
  • ooodsie said:

That's the same one my OB does. My current insurance covers it 100%, but I'll have new insurance on the 1st, so I have to wait & see. I'm pretty sure it's basically the same thing. I do know there are 2 versions, one with the XY component and one without.
  • Be careful. We were told the same thing but neither the Dr. or rep would confirm or put in writing that it would be $25. We tried to back up some things with insurance and they wanted us to get pre authorization in order to find out our out of pocket cost. The Dr. said they don't do any pre authorizations so we couldn't even find out our coverage. It all seemed really sketchy to us so we declined. We didn't want to get stuck with a $3000 bill! I would have probably taken the docs word but my husband was not comfortable.
