Am I doing this right?? Chart stalk please?

Hi, so I'm new-ish.  I read the newbie blog.  Lurked for awhile.  I participate in the threads every now and then.

I started temping on CD1 last month, and stopped because I realized I was doing it wrong.  (I wasn't taking my temp while I was still in bed.)  So, I started over on CD1 this month, but my chart looks like the temperatures vary way more than some of the other ones I've seen while lurking.  Does this look normal so far??  Could I still be doing something wrong?  I'm temping vaginally, and I skipped one day this week because...holiday party hangover.

Maybe it will look more normal after a full cycle, but so far it looks like I might still be doing it wrong.  Thoughts??  TIA! :)

ETA:  I was planning on temping for a few months before we actively start TTC so that I'm able to accurately predict when I will O.  That's the point of temping early, correct??

It's really early in your cycle right now; having temps like yours are normal.  It should even out a little later, but you have no reason to believe you're doing it wrong or that your chart won't turn out more like the ones you see.

When you start temping a cycle, FF "zooms in" to the temps you already have and will "zoom out" if you get a reading much higher or lower.

In short, nothing to worry about, just keep at it for a whole cycle and you should have a better idea of what to expect for your body! :)  Good luck.
Thank you!  I didn't want to waste another month doing it wrong.  I'll keep with it!

  • It's really early, and the important thing is being able to see the shift so even with some variance if you can see that then you're good.

If you want to try and minimize fluctuations, you can set your alarm for the same time every day. I just go back to sleep afterwards.

@Greeneyes842‌ I have been temping at exactly 5:30 a.m. every day (with the exception of awful hangover day). However, I am a glass-of-wine-a-day type of girl. Do you think the alcohol is making a difference? It's something I've considered cutting out, but it seems that the general consensus around here is that it's not necessary.

  • I don't temp during AF because my temps are incredibly rocky and it just bugs me to see them hop all over the place when it doesn't even matter. AF is usually 5-6 days for me (unlike your 3) so it's nearly a week break from temping and then my temps stay pretty even after that.

  • Here is a list of factors that can affect your temp:

I think some people are more susceptible to those factors than others.  I always had really jagged temps throughout my cycle.  This month I have been really strict about temping the same time every day and they really evened out.  I'm also pretty affected by the room temperature/what I wear to bed/how many blankets I use (which is unfortunate because we have no control over our heat).  The one day I wore full pajamas this month I had a temp spike and ended up discarding the temp.

My guess about alcohol use is that if you drink more or less the same amount every night, it shouldn't affect your chart, but if you drink some nights and not others it could make a difference.  Alcohol is a vasodilator so it can actually lower your core body temp.

Definitely wait it out and see what it looks like at the end of the cycle.  GL!
