Nausea & Prenatal Vitamns Don't Mix!

edited December 2014 in July 2015 Moms
I haven't taken my vitamins in 3 days because I'm so sick feeling every evening! I've always been bad when it comes to swallowing pills. Just thinking about taking them makes me even more queezy. I know my baby needs them cause I'm not good at eating everything I'm supposed to.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks in advance!!

  • Sorry you're not feeling well! I asked my doctor about prenatal gummies and she said those will work. No sense in taking a horse pill and throwing it back up because you gag on it.

  • I'm in the same boat, I hate forcing down my pills every night. The prenatal Rx is at least a lot smaller than the giant horse pill ones I had from OTC. I'm thinking about switching to gummies, but I still have other medications I have to take every night too so not sure if it matters. I've asked DH to talk to me while I'm taking them so that I'm a little distracted and not focusing so much on swallowing. Seems to help me.
  • Just got back from my first prenatal apt. And my midwife told me to skip the prenatals and go for the kids vitamins (gummies or flinstones) until my nausea calms down a bit and then go back to the prenatals.
  • Talk to your doc, but I wouldn't skip. If nothing else, it's super important to get folic acid (soft palate malformations and sorts of fun stuff). Like PPs, I've had better luck an alternative to the standard, hard pills. I haven't done gummies, but I love BellyBar brand chewables.

  • Gummy prenatals are awesome.  I take the target version and I love them!

  • I don't take prenatals.  They make me incredibly queasy.  I do however take folic acid, calcium, B6 and Vitamin D.  My Dr said as long as I'm taking folic acid he doesn't care if I take a prenatal.

  • I was the same way so I bought the gummy parental vitamins and it has helped out a lot!
  • I take mine in the middle of the night. I have to get up to pee anyways.
  • Gummy vitamins with dinner are my savior!
  • Thanks guys! My appointment with the doc is Monday & my first ultrasound, I'm gonna force them down a couple more days then ask her if gummys would work! I'm so bad with any pills in general. How do the gummys taste??
  • All prenatal vitamins made me really sick an had to keep going to the doctor my doctor now has me taking normal flinstone vitamins two different kinds two for brain an two for body an I take them at night I feel so much better now ! Just an idea
  • I got the vitafusion and when you first open the bottle you can smell some weird fish smell (maybe i imagined it lol) but they are lemon and raspberry flavored and mine went down just fine.

Folio acid is the most important in first trimester and most prenatal vitamins don't have enough so I take 5mg if folic acid. I try to get the prenatal but I'm in the same boat.
  • Take it before bed with a snack. Don't take anything (additional vitamins) extra unless dr says. Anything more may cause the nausea. Also try to always have something in your stomach. A lot of time sickness comes from not eating, even though you think you're too sick to eat. Good luck!
