Calling all underachievers!

Make me feel better about milestones. I know you shouldn't compare, but it's hard not to!

DS is 3 months today and when we do tummy time, he doesn't even do a mini-pushup yet. I know lots of babies younger who are rolling from stomach to back, lifting chest off ground and holding head up, etc.

I'm afraid it's because we don't do enough tummy time. He is getting better head control when I sit him up and hold him upright. He is tracking toys and sounds with his head. He is doing lots of leg lifts on his back so that's good! I'm just worried about the lack of progress with pushing up or doing anything on his stomach.

I just want to hear from others whose kids are the same so I don't feel so behind!! Or from mom's who have kids who were late bloomers on the rolling/pushup front and it wasn't the end of the world :0)

ETA: I say "underachievers" in jest. I know that no baby is really an underachiever and they all do things in their own time and that's not a bad thing.

Re: Calling all underachievers!

  • DD is 11 weeks and doesn't do much during tummy time either. She doesn't track stuff with her eyes unless she wants to. If shes looking at the light I can't distract her with a toy. ;) No worries. All babes are different.

My LO (10.5 weeks) hates tummy time on the mat. We do it on my chest and she does better with lifting her head that way, but if she's on the mat she just lays there and cries, won't even pick up her head even though she knows how. Have you tried it on your chest to see if she'll lift her head that way? Our LOs will catch up soon :)
Yep I do it on my chest and he will lift his head up and hold it for 5 seconds or so, then go back to bobbing. Crying the whole time of course. But his arms just stay splayed out to the side, he hasn't made an attempt to put them under him and push at all.

  • My DS just turned 3 months yesterday and he's the same way. I know he can lift his head but he can't figure out where to put his hands. I downloaded the baby first app on my phone which he loves so I put that on and place his hands for him and he's starting to do better. I felt the same way though seeing a lot of my friends babies who are younger doing better than him. I also try to remember he was 3 weeks early so that also plays a role. They'll do it eventually though.

  • My lo will be three months next week and only rolls over if he is screaming mad because he hates tummy time.

If he is tracking sights and sounds then I think you are all good.  Milestones are just guidelines.  Some babies will do them quicker, some slower, and some "right on time".

A pediatrician at our practice told me we should be doing tummy time 45 minutes at a time several times a day.  I am only with the kid awake for 4-5 hours a day so we are not able to hit that mark.  I have found my little nugget does keep progressing with more practice.

  • Besides the hoppy or my chest, we do formal tummy time only like twice a week. DD is 9 weeks and can hold her head steady for the most part but that's about it. I also didn't do tummy time much with DS and he still crawled by 7 months and held his head up at a normal time. Don't sweat it too much baby will do what she will when she is ready and the fact that you actually do tummy time is really good.

DS (11 weeks) holds his head up really well when someone holds him but during tummy time he just sorts of sucks his hand or lays facedown on the activity mat. He lifts his head only minimally when I really coax him. He also doesn't roll over ever. We don't do tummy time as much as we should because he gets so mad about it. The only thing he tracks with his eyes is me.

I don't really do it the way you should :0(  Since I work I don't get him that much 5 days a week. I do it maybe 10 minutes a day. I'm about to have 2 weeks off work for the holidays though and am determined to do it more every day!!!!

45 minutes at a time!? DS would scream himself into a huge fit if I tried to do that.
Uhhhh there is no way we would be able to hit that. I consider it a small miracle if we can get 3 consecutive minutes in before she starts screaming her head off.

DD is only 7 weeks and doesn't do so great at tummy time on the floor or on our chests. She hates both. I do hold her upright over my shoulder though and she has really great head control that way. I just need her to work on using her arms to hold herself up. We try and get in 15 minutes a day. I will let her fuss during tummy time...because otherwise we would get no time in...but as soon as she starts actually crying I stop. I find if I let her go too long being upset, the rest of the day she will start screaming instantly during tummy time.

  • DS1 had reflux and so he hated tummy time. We would do maybe a total of 5 minutes a day until around 4 months. Then he started doing longer stretches, but at that point he had better head control and I think that's why he liked it more.

FWIW, now DS1 is way ahead of the curve on physical milestones.  I wouldn't worry at this point because things are changing so rapidly for our babies. A day seems like a long time to an adult, but for babies there is a ton of growing that happens in a day.  One day you will look at your baby and say, wow when did you start doing that?!

  • DD will be 11 weeks on Friday and she still hates tummy time.  If it makes you feel any better she also doesn't like putting her arms under her and pushing up.  She almost always gives up on tummy time after a few minutes even if she's laying on my chest.  I'm not too worried since I know she can do these things she just doesn't like to.  She will catch up.
We are so excited to grow our family!
