Freaked out a bit by anatomy scan

we had our anatomy scan today and everything looked great except for the baby's right kidney. It looks like it was a little full with urine, and according to the doctor it was just over the size of normal. She said that if I were to look it up, Id find that the baby has an increased chance of having Down syndrome. When I had my NT scan, everything came back normal and my blood tests showed a very low risk for it. Has anyone else had this happen? My doctor said we'd just keep an eye on it and it could go away by the next ultrasound but I can't help but feel uneasy.

Re: Freaked out a bit by anatomy scan

  • Thank you! @sastahlman‌ @shmeell25‌ she said she would do another scan at 28 weeks as it usually resolves itself between then and 32 weeks. She said I could always get an amniocentesis but she thought that it was unnecessary, so we'll just have to wait and see

  • No need to worry just yet. As pp stated, it has happened to other people's children and they are fine. FX for you!
  • Thank you all so much!! Im glad to hear that it's happened to other people and turned out to be ok!!
  • Sounds like you have a very good and diligent doctor who wants to keep you informed. I'm so sorry it's causing you worry and I'll pray your follow up appointment shows everything all cleared up!

  • Swollen kidneys are not that uncommon, especially in boys. They usually resolve on their own. If I remember right, it often has something to do with the organs and connecting equipment growing at slightly different rates, which can cause them to retain fluid and drain more slowly.

Of course, sometimes there are other reasons, but at this stage I would try not to worry about anything until the next scan.

  • yes - i had that with DS.  He was born perfectly healthy.  We monitored it annually and at his second birthday it was 100% normal and they said no need to check it again. Hydronephrosis is what they called it (may have the spelling wrong) -but at 1 year it was significant improved and at 2 years it was gone.

DS had Hydronephrosis too. I'm not sure if that is spelled right or not either though. NOTHING was ever said about down syndrome ever. I was told that the ultra sounds now are better than they were before and it's getting picked up more. A lot of us could of had it and we have no idea. you really only need one working kidney, so they aren't sure how much it does/doesn't affect people. For DS I had to have another ultra sound and it didn't go away at that time. So he had to see a specialist that all they could do was monitor it. For him it went away by 1.

I was told they monitor it until they are 8 I think. If by 8 it didn't go away then they might have to do something depending on the patient and what is going on. Could just be a "simple" blockage issue or something with the kidney it's self.

  • I just got a phone call from a nurse at my doctor's office yesterday saying the same thing. It really freaked me out because all she mentioned is that it could be down syndrome. After some google searches, I found what PPs have mentioned, that it could be something that corrects on its own and ends up being no big deal. It's more common in boys, and ours is a boy. So I'm praying that's all it is. I wish the nurse would have been more reassuring...I go in for a follow up ultrasound in 3 weeks.
I hope you and I both hear good news at our next ultrasound!!
  • FX it all goes away!
  • They told me my son had a thickened nuchal fold, and that it was an indictor for Trisomy 18....  I was upset for a week before I saw a specialist who told me it was nothing, everything measured fine and my son was born with no trisomy!
  • Fingers crossed everything goes well.

  • Mine wasn't the same thing, but my anatomy scan also showed some concerning things (2 soft markers- cyst on brain, bright spot on heart) that can point to Down syndrome or trisomy 18. My doctor assured me that everything was most likely fine because my panorama results were negative, but of course I'm still worried. Try to stay positive and think about your good blood results. I also heard that just one marker is usually no bid deal, so that is good news for you! I, too, have another scan at 28 weeks to check up on baby and hope everything clears up by then. Fingers crossed for us both!

  • Thinking of you! Like PP said, this might self correct either in utero or soon after birth. My a/s found a small heart defect that we are also anticipating will go away before birth- fingers crossed!
