So hopefully I know my audience here--seems like most of you are the sort of people who not only cloth diaper, but worry about plastic water bottles, switch out nasty cleansers for the homemade options, look for parabens on self-care products, etc. Amiright, or amiright?

Along those lines, has anyone ever found a really good source (book, website, etc.) for information about nontoxic pregnancy? Or maybe a nontoxic baby book that has a good section on pregnancy? Someone asked me this (as I am one of the hippie crunchy people among the infertile set) and I had no good answers.

I meant a good source of science-based information on products to avoid, beyond BPA.

ETA: Also, preparing a nontoxic nursery, info on whether food needs to be organic....

Alicia Silverstone's book Kind Mama is about green/safe fertility, pregnancy, and baby care. She is super duper crunchy. IMO she is over the top. But I did get some good info from her book.

@pblge, I don't have any recommendations and I'm sure you're already aware of this but https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ gives safety ratings for personal care products. Their home page also seems to include some food stuff now too.

@welly01 - I do know about that database, yes, and I use it frequently despite its detractors! The food addition made me switch out my yogurt--sadness.

@abby8279 - Thanks for the Kind Mama suggestion! I wasn't thinking of her bc in my mind she's in the crazy anti-vaccer camp (sorry if this gives offense to anyone), but I'm glad to know there's good stuff in her book, too.

I've been wary of herbalists for the exact reasons that @missmimsyy mentions. Has anyone gone to one and had them appropriately cautious about untested herbs and similar during pregnancy?

Herbalists often rely on a long history of traditional and safe use in pregnancy. I guess you have to decide how comfortable you are with that. With all alt hcp the challenge is finding one you feel like you can trust. I guess that's true for traditional hcp, too.

I think organic is super important. For my own health but even more because of the farming practices involved and their impact on the environment my kids will inherit and have to live with.

I have Alicia Silverstone's first book, The Kind Diet. I really like the approach she takes, offering options for those who aren't vegetarian or vegan as well as a more strict approach for those who are. I don't follow the book as the foundation for my diet but it's helped me discover a lot of healthy foods I wouldn't have known I liked. I haven't read The Kind Mama yet, it came out after I had my daughter unfortunately, but if I were pregnant again I would be checking it out.
