Help with Pumping

LO is 5weeks, 5 days. I started pumping around 4 weeks and began pumping after her morning feeding. She feeds only on one breast , and I pump both about 30-60min after.
Problem is I dont seem to be getting much. Baby drinks 4-5oz each bottle and so I think I should pump at least as much, but sometimes I get only 3oz combined!
Anything you've found to help? I'm trying to build a stash for whenI go back to work & its so frustrating to sit there for 45 minutes most times and still get so little! I wish I didn't have to pump at all!

Re: Help with Pumping

  • it's totally normal to not get a lot of volume when you are not skipping any feedings! 3 oz is a great amount to get after having just nursed. when i was pumping to build up a stash before going back to work, i'd only get an ounce or two if i pumped in the morning after nursing DS. once you are at work and pumping to replace missed feedings, your volume will be much greater, so don't worry about not getting enough.

remember, though, you really only need enough to cover the first day back at work (approximately 12-15 ounces). i would consider anything frozen beyond that to be a huge bonus. if you are pumping and freezing 3 oz most days, then you should have way more than enough to have a nice cushion for when you go back to work.

  • @casey78‌ thanks for the info! As a FTM, I've tried to read up on everything but there are some questions you dont think of until you come across the situation, you know? I will look into the paced feedings and adjust what I need. Thankfully, baby has only had a few bottles, and never more than one a day, so I think it'll be easy enough to correct.
