Does anyone still swaddle at night?

We do but I'm wondering if we need to start transitioning out of it. Last night was rough and I'm thinking it might not have been too bad if DS could self soothe. I had to go in a bunch last night to replace his paci so perhaps he would have been ok if he could suck on his hands. Or maybe it was just a really bad night - who knows. He still seems to like being swaddled though. He has only rolled from belly to back once so we don't HAVE to stop due to rolling over.

I know everyone seems to love the zipadee zip...is it worth it? What size do you have? Is there something similar that we could use instead (the zipadeezips only seem to be available in size large)?

Re: Does anyone still swaddle at night?

  • We still swaddle for naps and nighttime sleep. I'm torn, because she sleeps through the night being swaddled and I don't want to mess with a good thing. On the other hand, I'm tired of bouncing her to sleep and think she'd probably be way more effective at self soothing if her hands were free to suck on. I may try putting her down for naps unswaddled and see if she's able to soothe herself to sleep without bouncing and, if so, try that again at night. If not, we'll continue to swaddle until she rolls over.
I'm being featured in a new pregnancy/motherhood blog during the month of October, so if you ever wanted to know more about my pregnancy, birth, and motherhood experiences than anyone ever should, check out my posts in the link below! :)

  • My LO was actually quite easy to transition out of the swaddle, it only took 1 week.  But I was anticipating a struggle and my mom actually made DS her own version of a zipadeezip by simply sewing the hand holes of a regular sleep sac shut.  We use it for naps because we are trying to get him to nap in his crib and not in the PnP, but at nights (in the PnP) he doesn't need it and uses his fingers to self-sooth himself back to sleep if he isn't hungry or wet.

  • We have been out of the swaddle for about a month and are using Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit. HOWEVER, after 10 consecutive days of bad nights (likely from sleep regression), I put him back in the Miracle Blanket last night and he did MUCH better. I think he is so active in his sleep during this developmental/growth spurt, that he wakes himself up a lot. So I think I'll swaddle again until we are through this phase.... or until he rolls over. Whichever comes first.
  • Yup.  He's starting to break out at least once a night though, but I'm going to try and hold on for a few more weeks.  DS1 stopped being swaddled somewhere around 5-6 months but I would prefer to get as close as possible to DS2 being able to find and replace his paci before I totally let his arms be free.

I do not remember anything in the 5.5-6.5 month period of DS1's life because I was that sleep deprived.  If I can avoid that level of exhaustion this time I will do whatever it takes, including duct taping the child into the swaddle.

  • We swaddle arms out that way he can suck in his hands if he wants.
  • We still swaddle. Last night I tried the houdini with velcro swaddle from this site: https://www.7swaddles.com/ - since he was breaking out. He woke up once to feed at 4:30. Trying again tonight! I do have a zipadeezip ordered and a merlin's magic suit since I know the transition is coming soon but his startle reflex is still too strong to have his arms totally free. He's just over 17 lbs and 26.5 inches but I ordered the small of the zipadeezip per the site's recommendations since he is use to being all snug.

Every baby is different :) Hope you find what works for you!
  • He seems to nap decently at daycare without being swaddled so maybe we'll give it a try tonight. Worst case I swaddle him up in the middle of the night.

  • Try the bottom only swaddle if that doesn't work.  Arms out, but she's still cocooned into safety.

  • We are trying a one arm un-swaddled this weekend. He's now a thumb sucker so we're just going to throw caution to the wind and try it out. He naps un-swaddled at daycare so why not?

We are still super swaddling until then.

  • I just had DH pick up the Halo SleepSack Swaddle so we can try arms out swaddle tonight. I have noticed that sometimes when DS gets fussy I just have to give him his paci and put my hand on his chest. He usually falls back to sleep. So maybe the snugness of bottom only swaddle will be good for him.

  • We still swaddle and sound like we are going through the same problem @lburkey21 we have been woken up so many times in the past like week to give DS his paci. When he's awake he loves sucking on his hands but he just isn't ready to be unswaddled he startles himself to much
  • nope, stopped at 6 weeks.

  • Stopped swaddling about 3ish weeks ago (right when she was 3 months) when she became noticeably uncomfortable in it.  She also started breaking out of it.  I had the Magic Sleepsuit already purchased and ready to go.  She has been doing great the last 3 weeks.  We have a rough patch here and there but that is to be expected.
  • We never swaddled. LO has slept like a spread eagle since the beginning :)
  • We swaddle at night time only, arms out...
  • @heatherdances, we have the sleepsuit coming tomorrow, sounds like it's working well for you! Not sure if your little girl had her startle reflex still going, but if so, did you notice the suit muffling it? Ours loves his arms out but startles himself awake all the time!
  • We swaddle at night only with the A&A blankets and he is busting out of it too many times and I'm so ready to get the Velcro sleep sacs and a zipadeezip to try out. I've tried leaving his hands out because he does suck on them while awake but nope, he hits and rubs his face so much when he's sleepy it's not soothing at all haha so that and his startle reflex still being strong he needs his arms swaddled still.

  • We are still swaddling. We didn't actually start until DS was 2 months old because he hated it at first. It ended up being the best decision, but I am not looking forward to weening him. We have tried one arm out, and he does not sleep soundly like that.

  • I swaddled until 11 weeks and then switched to the zipadee zip. IMO it was totally worth it. He is really wanting his thumb now so we had to go with a regular sleep sack.

  • We're trying to transition to the crib from the RNP before we phase out the swaddle.  For right now, we're full swaddle - but he's a preemie, so we're behind in development a bit.

Re: Zippadeezip - I bought a "SwaddleMe" on Zulilly earlier this week because it looked very similar to the zippadeezip.

  • @kneipp I was very worried about the startle reflex...but she has grown out of it. She thrashes some before she goes to sleep but it's mostly the head moving back and forth and she does leg lifts! I started with just naps to try it out...don't expect it to work overnight. I wouldn't say it it's "magic" but she sleeps about he same but a little better in the sleepsuit and I keep her in it because our house can be a little chilly. We still have some rough nights...good luck!!!
  • 3 months here- we still swaddle sometimes, depending on what she's dressed in for bed. If she's in a fleece sleeper, we don't swaddle. Naked except for a diaper or onesie we swaddle. I haven't noticed that she sleeps better one way or the other, so I think her startle reflex is mostly gone.
  • We are. He sleeps very well swaddled. We haven't tried to make the transition yet. He is also still sleeping in the RNP we will break both at the same time. My goal is 6 months.
