So how many of us get asparagus pee?

I am going to spread this possible misinformation like a rabid anti-vaxxer and ya'll can make up your own mind, But I heard some where (And I am too lazy to look things up so I will take it as truth) that everyone gets asparagus pee. But only some of us (like me) can smell it.

I don't ever recall thinking that asparagus pee is particularly pungent. Am I one that can't smell it?

Whaaaa...I want to change my vote...I wouldn't touch asparagus with a 10-foot pole! My poor hubby can only get it if he buys it and cooks it himself (which is extremely rare).

Thank you for clearing up the smelling information since I was clearly spreading lies! I was introduced to asparagus later in life so asparagus pee was super funny at first. Now I hate it! But not enough to stop eating it.

Now I'm embarrassed because I voted no and have been asparagus peeing confidently for years. I suppose I'm just unable to smell it. I'll pee more sheepishly after a feed of asparagus from now on.

Well according to a paper in PubMed, there is variation both in producers of the smelly urine and perceivers of the smelly urine. The genetic variant for non-producers is unknown, but the variant for non-smellers is a SNP called rs4481887. I feel more learned.

I have it and I can smell it. My husband doesn't have it, but he can smell it in the bathroom after I go.

I'd rather have asparagus pee then have the genetic trait where cilantro tastes like soap. That sounds horrible, I love cilantro.

I have never noticed stinky pee after eating it, but I never eat it in huge quantities. What is truly disturbing is beet pee. While not publicly noticeable, it really freaks me out the first time, every time!
