Nutramigen users- past or present

Hi Ladies if you use Nutramigen can you answer a couple of questions for me

1. What symptoms did your LO have before you put him or her on it?
2. How long did it take to see a change in your LO?
3. Happy with it? Why or why not?

We (hubby and Ped) are trying to figure out what is causing our LO to spit up so much. I know all babies spit up but when weight is already low it becomes a BIG issue and we are trying to figure out if it's a milk allergy or acid reflux.  Thanks for your help Ladies!

Re: Nutramigen users- past or present

  • We used Nutram for my eldest when she had colic and reflux. We had her on Zantac (my current 5 month old is on compounded Prilosec). The Nutramagen was disgustingly smelly, expensive, and did not work after a 3 week trial with my 5 year old when she was 3/4 months old. Eventually she outgrew the reflux (colic lasted until 11 months). Nothing worked with her, so we did not have improvement with it.

  • We tried it but never stuck with it because DS absolutely hated the taste. I don't blame him though, it really stinks. Way worse then powdered formula.

So the pedi upped his dose of Zantac and we went back to enfamil gentlease. It's been working fine.

  • 1. What symptoms did your LO have before you put him or her on it? We have used nutramigen and alimentum with both DD and DS. They both had a lot of mucous in their stools, excessive fussiness, difficulty eating (took hours to finish a 1-2oz bottle), and rashes.

    2. How long did it take to see a change in your LO? Noticed a change within 3 days for both kids. It was pretty pronounced with DD but she was older than DS when we put her on the formula.

    3. Happy with it? Why or why not? I hate the cost and smell of the formula but it works. Both my kids were also on medication for reflux.

DS spits up a lot. His weight is also really low. When I talked to my doctor about this she said that 4 months is usually the peak for spitting up and it generally decreases after that. I hope this is true and both our LOs start gaining weight soon!

Exactly this. He was refusing bottles. Instead of enfamil we are on Similac Soy now.

  • 1.  Reflux, insanely gassy, very difficult to feed (screaming, arching, stiffening), refusing to eat, nasty explosive poops

    2.  A few days.

    3.  No, we switched to Alimentum.  After a few weeks on Nutramigen all the symptoms came back, and we saw mucous in his poop.  The difference on Alimentum was immediate.
