Since it's clicky poll Wednesday:
How do you think extended family should open presents during a scheduled family get together?

All invited family members should be present, and gifts should be dispersed then opened together.

  • Loading the player...
  • I agree with @mirigirl‌ doing it that way allows for you to see what everyone got and it gives a second to thank thank the giver immediately

Mine and DH's family do present opening the same way. We sit in a room together and open gifts one by one. Yes it takes forever, but that way everyone has a chance to see what each other got. We love doing it that way :)
This is how we open presents, too. It can take HOURS but at least you know what everyone got!

Ditto! My family does it this way but we're relatively small (13 people) so it doesn't take too long (until you get to that once crazy aunt who receives a book and then proceeds to stop opening gifts and starting reading the book!).

DH's family does it the other way which drives me nuts (and really will once DD is here). It wouldn't bother me if we were late or didn't ask for a time, but when you tell me to be there at 4 and I'm there at 4 I expect to get to see everyone open their gifts!

  • We open presents together. On my side of the family we do them one by one so we can see what everyone got and share the joy. DH family just passes them all out and everyone opens at once. It drives me crazy because I sit and watch everyone so I'm always last.
  • Growing up someone played Santa and passed out gifts and we watched each person open theirs. Now just being DH and me we take turns and if we go to MIL they pass out to everyone and its a free for all. NMS...but oh well.

    Same way here too!

  • With my immediate family, we open one at a time with everyone there.

However, with my extended family, many cousins are married so it is too hard to get together at the exact same time. So, we have to open as we come.

  • My little family, DH and two LO's, open our gifts on Christmas morning, then we stay home all day. We don't wait for anyone to get here but it is an open house for anyone to stop by at any time.

Yup this is how we do it too.  First we read from the Bible in Luke about Christ's birth, pray, then the kids open Santa gifts and we go from there.  The ONLY thing that the kids are able to get into before we open gifts is their stockings.  Usually we are fixing breakfast and waiting for everyone to wake up before we open gifts.  If it is on a Sunday and our church is having services that morning then gifts wait until we get back from church.
