I really don't get it (my vent for the day)

I don't get why people comment on baby's/toddler's sizes all the time.  I mean adults come in all shapes and sizes...and many of those DIFFERENT shapes and sizes are all healthy shapes and sizes, yet all our babies are supposed to fit perfectly in the 50th percentile for weight and height or they are too big or too little????

This really drove me nuts when my pedi suggested seeing a nutritionist for Taylor when she dropped from 99th percentile to 75th...but had still gained weight and gotten taller between two of her appointments.  Taylor started out big and evened out...yet I wasn't feeding her enough or something because she dropped percentiles according to the doctor.  And when Audrey did the EXACT same thing, it was confirmation to me that my kids are just going to grow like that.

YES there are overweight kids. YES their are underweight kids....and their are fat and skinny adults...but no one ever goes up to the adults and tells them to eat more/eat less...so why is it ok to comment to parents about their children's weight, when most likely the kid is a certain size due to genetics....not feeding...especially babies.

This one always bugs me...always.

  • Lack of something better to say?  Most times, it's strangers.  And they want to say something about your child, and usually blurt out the first thing they see!

  • This is why I love my pedi.  He asked how big MH and I were at birth.  He knows we are tall now, because he's met us.  He asked if our families were tall, etc.

He's never been concerned about Jackson being a big kid - because he knows based on our genetics that Jackson will likely be big.  MH and I are both the shortest in our families.  At 6'2" and 5'10".

I was 8.5lbs at birth being 2-3 weeks early.  My brother was 9lbs at 2 weeks early.  MH's family was the same.

ETA - the point being that he has made me feel at ease about Jackson's size so when people make stupid comments, it is easy to brush them off.  The comments are still irritating though - esp when people expect J to be more advanced verbally and such.  He's only 2!

  • Reagan is very tall for her age.  Everyone always comments about it.  I am 5'10", so it shouldn't really be a surprise to people that my kid is also tall.

It drives me nuts.  A little different than the weight, but still.

  • I hate that too. ?Hate it.?
    .
  • Didn't you know that kids are not real people and they should all grow the same, hit milestones at the same time, eat the exact same amount every day, and go to sleep and wake up at the same times every day?

Really, peoples' comments like this drive me nuts, too.  But if my dd's doctor says something, I usually give it some value and take it as true concern not something offensive.  I trust her.  Random strangers...not so much.

  • This really bothers me, too. DS1 is very skinny and DS2 is not. In comparison, it makes them each look skinnier or bigger than they really are. I'm really sick and tired of hearing my ILs make comment after comment about them. "Oh I bet in a few months, DS2 is going to be knocking DS1 over. He's going to be so much bigger than his older brother." Or when we first come visit, "OMG look at how much *bigger* he's gotten!! Oh he's soooo heavy!" Umm, actually he hasn't gained more than a couple of ounces in the last few months, TYVM, STFU.
  • It bugs me too.  Both my kids are in the 100% for height and EVERY time we go out I get comments.  "How old are they?  They are really tall."

Really?  I had no idea.  I thought it was normal to buy your 2 year old 4T clothes.

  • It bugs me, too. Everyone has a comment. I've stopped responding most of the time. I love hearing people say how "huge" DD is -- ummm, she's in the 6th percentile!

  • Thank.you. I get comments "oh, she's so tiny for her age" then 10 minute later at a different store "oh, she's so tall!"  I have no idea what percentile she's in, never have. And I honestly don't care! She's growing, obviously isn't lacking in nutrition and the pedi never brings it up.

  • Thank you! I am so glad that the pedi was never like that. DD was born below the charts.  She never made it onto the weight chart until her 3rd b-day, and I am pretty sure they got a higher weight than she really was.  Both sides of our family are little Italians...she is not destined to be a tall person.  One day, regardless of her size now, she will be probably be sort of  round with huge boobs and a mustache...but at the moment she is tiny.
  • "One day, regardless of her size now, she will be probably be sort of  round with huge boobs and a mustache"

    Freaking HILARIOUS!

  • It's true, there is not a female in my family or my husbands that doesn't have a mustache or a standing appointment for a wax.
  • I really enjoyed this vent.

And furthmore being a short skinny kid at 2 does not mean they'll be a short skinny 20 year old. It's not worth getting in a tither over. Kids have growth spurts and gain and lose weight.
