I mean, how is this humanly possible?! I cried when they told me. Well I'm on myfitnesspal now and sticking to a 2,000 calorie diet and drinking a gallon of water per day. Hopefully I can drop a couple pounds in a healthy way.
2,000 calories a day is not strict at all. It's actually reasonable. I have researched it and will double check with my doctor at the next appt. I wasn't able to get in with my normal doctor because he had a death in the family so I was scheduled for a different doc. I am eating very well...whole wheat in moderation, fruits, raw veggies and lots of water and of course I'm taking a prenatal and I actually feel better!
AutumnRecciusSmilz4782 said! People gain at different times during pregnancy. Especially if you've lost weight in first tri due to morning sickness or if you were underweight to begin with, your gain may not be surprising--may even be expected! Please check with your doctor before you try to actively LOSE weight. Of course, replacing some foods with more nutritious ones might be a good thing to do without wanting to lose weight.
FWIW, I gained almost nothing in 1st tri, and it looks like I've gained 8 lbs in the last two weeks. My doctor seemed pleased by this.
I'm a heavier set woman. I stayed the same weight in the first trimester but I was very sick. They weighed me at 230 and before I was 216 and some oz. I probably wasn't eating the best because I was so sick in the first trimester so when I got to the second most of my sickness went away and I went a little crazy and then there was Thanksgiving. first and Foremost I want my baby healthy and of course I want to provide a healthy body for that baby to grow in. I want to eat healthier and if I lose a couple pounds while trying to eat healthy then I cant complain.
Did your doctor suggest you "lose" weight? Or that you even start calorie counting? As PP have stated everyone gains weight differently during their pregnancy and at different times. I wouldn't be to up or down about it until you speak with your doctor. You are not the first to mention a 15lb weight gain thus far.

This is my third pregnancy and I have never, NEVER had this much weight gain in 4 weeks. That's just crazy! I know every pregnancy is different but that was all new to me.
People lose weight all the time during pregnancy and not mean to and no one looks down on them. Their baby tend to be perfectly healthy. I just don't understand why I can't just lose a couple while eating a healthy diet.

Because losing weight means that you are restricting your intake in some way which is not recommended when you are pregnant. Women who lose unintentionally are typically so sick that they can't keep anything down and then are in turn given medicine from their doctor. I don't understand why you would consider what you are doing as the same...

You may not need to lose weight, rather slow the rate of gaining. I've gained about as much as you (started on the heavier side) and my MW and I have discussed maintaining steady healthy weight gain, by no means weight loss. Focus on eating nutritious rich diet and exercising and you'll be fine. Don't worry about the number on the scale
Okay. I'm eating healthy and not trying to eat out of control. I'm simply just tracking what I eat so I'm conscious of what and how much goes in my body. That's healthy right? My main goal isn't to drop pounds. I'm saying I wouldn't mind if I dropped a pound or two hear and there.
Yeah the last thing I want to do is restrict myself and of course my unborn baby. I'm just trying to be smart about my choices so I track it. I will talk to my doctor about the 2,000 calories and see if he approves and if he doesn't I'll listen to what he says.
I'm completely agreeing with everything PPs have said and also want to add that unless this fitness/nutrition app has a specific "pregnancy" setting on it, it's not going to advise you correctly about your food intake. There are different nutrients that pregnant women need to focus on getting to help with the baby's growth and development. For example, is this app going to make sure you're getting an average of 70 grams of protein a day? That's how much a pregnant woman needs daily as opposed so the 45g a non-pregnant woman needs.

This! Maintain a healthy diet, getting the nutrients that you need and you'll be fine. Cutting back on those vital nutrients just to shed an extra 5 lbs does not make sense.
As you said, you started overweight to begin with, so you are going to carry some extra weight. Pregnancy is not the time to diet, once your LO comes you'll have plenty of time to diet and get in shape.

I gained like 9pounds in a month after not gaining anything in the first part of pregnancy. It's okay to try to eat healthy but not to do it to lose weight. I'm eating healthy but that's only due to finally being able to eat healthy foods that I enjoy. The first trimester I couldn't eat anything but carbs due to being nauseous. It's good to have a well balanced diet. Your body will gain when it wants to. Do your research and keep your doctor informed of what you're doing and see if he agrees.

Agreed! FWIW, depending on how far along in you are in your pregnancy, I don't think 2000 calories is a ridiculous restriction. When I first got pregnant, my midwife told me I should be eating 300 extra calories a day, which actually put me around 2000. But as other pp have said, I'm not an expert so consult with your doctor
I gained 8lbs in 2 weeks when I was pregnant with my son, prob at the beginning of the 3rd trimester. He told me to just watch what I eat. I told him I did, it looked just as good on the plate as it tasted in my mouth. :-)
Actually I always gain all my weight in the beginning and never anything in the end.
I put on about 12 pounds in 4 weeks but I am still down 10 pounds so my doctor was okay with it since I lost so much in the beginning and am carrying twins.
Also were you being weighted at the same time, each time, wearing the same clothing? Different times of day you will weight different amounts.
OP, yes, that is a lot of weight to gain quickly, but like PPs said, the goal should be to slow down the gain (if your doctor agrees), not lose pounds. Answer this honestly: Is your goal to be healthy, or to lose weight? The two are not always the same. Calorie restriction even while not pregnant is actually not recommended by a lot of nutrition experts for various reasons. As long as the foods you are putting into your body are good, healthy foods and you're not stuffing yourself with them until your stomach hurts, you shouldn't need to count your calories.
A big problem with calorie restriction (pregnant or not) is that you almost inevitably end up doing unhealthy things to stay under that "magic number," like skipping the handful of almonds in favor of some popcorn, having skim instead of whole milk with your cereal (even though whole milk is a healthy product has more nutrients and will keep you full for longer) or deciding to only eat half your dinner (even though you're still hungry) because you caved and had a donut for breakfast. If you've already hit your 2,000 calories by the end of dinner but you don't get to bed until 11:00 and you're starving for a snack, you shouldn't feel guilty for eating a banana.
OP yes it is a lot of weight to gain in 2 weeks and as an overweight person myself, I would also freak out a bit also. But there is a lot to consider, what you've been eating, water weight, also bowel movements But, I wouldn't go out aiming to lose weight. Consider a real food lifestyle change, meats/ fruits/vegetables and healthy fats and also butter and cheeses. Stay away for sugars I understand you must feel horrible right now but way up tomorrow and try to stay away from the shitty foods, and prepare all your meals/snacks so you don't get hungry. Please feel free to PM me at any time, I know that feeling you have right now as I've lived it, but you will be ok. Get those amazing great nutrients in your body for that baby and to get that smile back on your face
I gained about 10lbs my first trimester, mostly because of poor eating habits and not working out. It totally freaked me out internally at my last appointment when the scale reached the highest number Ive ever seen on it. My immediate reaction was to start dieting, eating better, hoping to decrease or slow the gain.
However, after googling it, most sites/articles really encourage against trying to lose weight. It's just not a healthy mentality to have while pregnant. There is a reason why Weight Watchers boots you from their program when they find out your pregnant. Instead of focusing on the number, or eating less, I've really just tried to focus on what my body tells me it needs. I make sure I eat 3 meals a day, stay away from fried stuff because it makes me feel crappy anyway. And instead of looking for ice cream at night, I eat those little oranges which I'm currently obsessed with. I am consciously making food choices that are good for my baby, but not stressing myself out about counting calories or eating a few Christmas cookies. Good luck!

Thank you for support. It's really hard seeing those number shoot up so early in the game. I'm going to talk more with my doctor Jan 5th when I go back. He ultimately sways my decision/choice. Until then I will just stick with eating healthy! Thanks for your response.

Thank you so much for your kind response also! It's a struggle when being over weight. I can literally look at food and gain weight. I'm not terribly overweight because a lot of ppl say I carry it well but when I see my numbers shoot up I cringe.

I just want to eat healthier. My tracking what I eat on a daily basis helps keep me accountable.

This was very frustrating to read. I lost 7 pounds in two weeks early in this pregnancy because I was vomiting so much and couldn't eat or drink anything. No one "looked down" on me because I was sick as hell. Yes, baby was and is still healthy, but it was not a good thing.
I have no comment on the rest of this thread other than listen to you doctor.
Honey I was sick as a dog also and vomiting my brains up. I know how it is. When I hit the second trimester my weight just shot up. That's my issue. I've never done that before. I feel like because I want to count my calories I'm getting so much judgement because I want to slow my weight gain. I'm overweight woman so I have to be more conscious.

Then literally log the food you eat, but leave the number of calories out of it. Your goal should be to eat BETTER, not eat LESS.
I ignore the scales when pregnant. I put on a TON of weight with DD, then dropped most of it shortly after she was born. And yes, not pregnant I'm considered "over weight". I've been very careful this time around to not eat so much junk ( pop tart at 3 am anyone?) but if I'm hungry, I eat. No attention is paid to calories, I simply try to make good food choices. I agree with the others, unless a doctor TOLD you to lose weight and how to do it while pregnant I would not even try. You are supposed to gain weight while pregnant, in some cases quiet a bit of weight. Your baby doesn't care if you were heavy pre-pregnacy, your body needs what it needs.
Metabolism, body size, muscle mass, activity levels, the types of foods you are eating all dictate how much you should be eating. It is ridiculous to say every woman needs 2000 cals a day; everyone's body differs. It may be a growth spurt or you are fibbing on your journal entries. (I also food journal) For example, I had a candy cane and it was 50 cal...50 cals is 50 cals and is going into the journal. Lastly, portion size...a lot of people have no idea what a real portion size is of their favorite foods; using measuring spoons/ cups, scales. Good luck.
