Baby Names

Peyton

we are naming our little girl
Peyton Leigh. We both have known this name to be more for girls than boys and both like it. Now we are wavering between Peyton and Payton. I really am leaning toward Peyton but hearing girls use the a??

  • I prefer the look of Peyton, and I think you could go either way

  • I think the Peyton spelling seems/ feels more innate.

  • Peyton is a girls name.... :|
  • As I said in my original post, we've both known girls to have this name (before Peyton manning came to fame). Young girls through the age of 35. I've also never considered Payton until I read these boards. And, it's #51 for 2013 top 100 girls, and not even close to that number on the boys list. Question wasn't if it was a girls name, it was regarding spelling.

  • I like the suggestion of Petra. I live in Denver and I would think you were Bronco's fans. Peyton is all boy but by all means, change the 'e' to an 'a' and now it's a girl name.

  • How about neither, that name is awful on a girl.
  • Peyton. Payton makes it look like she's for rent. I do think you could do a lot better either way.

    Peightyn.
SOMEONE IS GOING TO TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY AND BE ALL "I SAW THIS AWESOME SPELLING ONLINE, MEET MY DAUGHTER PEIGHTYN"
Too late. I used to babysit a girl named Peightyn. She was 11 at the time. I would say she is around the age of 15 by now. And my mom's friend has a niece (she is probably 12) that is named Peighton. Eek!

  • In regards to the OP, I know A LOT of little girls named Payton (<--spelled that way). I know one little boy named Peyton. I know a girl named Peightyn and another named Peighton. Annnnnnd another little girl named Payten (and every time I see it....I think "Pay ten......pay ten dollars?"

Anyway, so when I see "Payton" I always assume that it is a girl. When I see "Peyton" I assume it is a boy. When I see "Payten/Peightyn/Peighton"....I assume their parents are f*ucked up.....

  • Even of this was actually a girl's name I'd never use it...it is so so trendy right now. There are at least 5 little girls named Peyton on my FB news feed. And I don't have like a thousand friends or anything. Peyton in 2010-2020 is going to be like Madison 2000-2010. There are so many great names out there that aren't overused. Pick one of those.

And this is coming from an early 80s Jennifer btw.
  • @delujm0‌ early 80's Lindsey here -- feeling your pain. I definitely steered clear from trendy names based on my own experience!
  • I would avoid anything that looks like Pay A Ton

  • So many good points have been made.  If you must go with this name, on a girl, I have no idea how to tell you to spell it.  There are so many incorrect variations.
  • Neither spelling is going to make it more or less girly. Use whichever
  • I'm not a fan of Peyton, but most people use Peyton for a boy or a girl.

Source: I'm from Indianapolis, where Peyton is a very common name. They love Peyton Manning here. I've worked at the children's museum and zoo and have seen it on a lot of kids, boys and girls.

I think it is a lovely name for a little girl (and personally I only know girls with this name). If I were you I'd use the 'Peyton' spelling. Congratulations on expecting your little girl!☺❤
  • I prefer Peyton but am not a huge fan of the name regardless how it's spelled.
  • IMO one vowel isn't going to make it more feminine either way.  It's still a very ponderous-sounding, masculine name to my ear.  DD has a friend named Payton whom I like a lot, but despite the good associations I just don't think it's an attractive name.  If you use it you might as well go with the more common spelling, which appears to be Peyton.

  • Thanks all. Not asking to
Make it more feminine as we have known this mostly to be on girls, just getting an opinion on if people see more of it with an A. We have always thought E. Pretty sure I was asking an e or an a, not some ridiculous additions of extra ys, ns or iegh...

  • Three of my FB friends have Peytons. A little boy with the traditional spelling, and two girls: Paeton and Paityn. I'm not a fan of the name for boys or girls, but those alternative spellings make me gag.

If I were to use this name, I would stick with the E.
  • I like Peyton. It doesn't make me think of Peyton Manning but rather the little girl on "The Game Plan" and she is super cute!
  • I think Peyton is all boy. It also sounds odd with Leigh.
  • What about Paige?
