3rd Trimester

Cervix sweep(tmi)

I am 38+4 and my doctor did a quick sweep yesterday to try and get things going. It has been 24 hours and I am still cramping and have a bloody, mucousy discharge. Should I go in to the hospital? In lots of pain :(

Re: Cervix sweep(tmi)

  • Are your contractions timeable? If they are discernible & 2-5 minutes apart-- and 1 minute in duration-- go ahead a call.

Just pain & discomfort? I'd wait it out.

  • Is it like menstrual cramping that is constant or does it come and go? If it comes and goes you need to time it. If it is consistent it's just normal discomfort caused by the sweep which can last for several days. The mucous is probably not going to stop until you deliver, sorry to say. I know it's way gross but it's constantly replenishes itself. It helps prevent infection though so it's a good thing! Good luck!

  • Your doctor should have warned you if what to expect after this procedure. The bloody, mucous discharge is totally normal. Brown or red blood. If you start bleeding like a menstrual period you need to be seen right away. The discharge will probably increase the next few days. Cramping is also very normal but if they become intense and timeable, time them. 5-3 mins apart lasting longer than an hour--call your OB or head to L&D asap.

I say all of this from experience. I had mine swept Mon for the first time at 38+1 and again today. Been contracting for 2.5 weeks, was 2cm dilated, 80% effaced on Mon. Today, 4cm dilated and 90% effaced. So progressing but no baby yet. Lost my mucous plug with the bloody show yesterday. Spent 7 hours in L&D today and was sent home to continue laboring. It's a waiting game. Good luck to you.

I agree with this. I've never had my membranes swept but DS was born at 38 weeks after I lost my plug and my water broke at home. My doc probably wouldn't sweep until 40 weeks but they sure wouldn't let me go til 42 weeks to deliver as there are more risks to the baby

  • @Jamieb0220‌ : you are wrong. Full Term has been re-labeled as 39 weeks. Early term is 37-39.
