Appts you can't take kids to

What do YOU do about appointments to which you can't take kids? I have OB appts with non-stress-tests twice/week until Baby is born. I had to take whatever times I could get as they are really booked plus it's over the holidays and the appointments have been quite long so far, like 2 hours. Wait, do NST, wait more, do OB appointment. I could arrange coverage for most, but I still don't have a sitter for Friday afternoon. MIL can't do it, former nanny can't do it, and high school sitters are all in school. My parents are a couple hours away. DH is busy. My good friends are all working and live at least 1/2 hour away.

I can't see how it works to take my two year old. I have to sit in the chair hooked to monitors and push the button whenever the baby moves. A two year old isn't just going to sit there looking at books in the NST room for 20 to 30 minutes. I'm still trying to think of someone who could babysit. I think I need a couple more options for people home during the day.

Luckily MIL can cover my dental appointment this week.

  • I've always taken the kids with me. We stop at the library and get some special books and activities to take with us. I also let them pick one small toy to take.

  • I took DS1 to all of my OB appts when i was pregnant. Until DH switched his shift I had no sitters.  Is it possible to use a stroller and give him an Ipad or something special to play with?
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • I also always brought my kids with me to appointments due to limited child care options. I had an activity bag for occasions like this with things and activities my kids loved (coloring books and crayons, teddy bears, cards). I would also change up the contents often to minimize boredom. It's not an ideal solution but it worked for me.

Now that my kids are older I just strategically plan appointments around school.

    Good luck!
  • I have never taken my boys to any one of my multiple medical appointments. I also don't have family nearby to help. So if possible I make the appointment when my husband is home, they are in school, or I ask my twin club if anyone there can help or if they know someone that can watch them. I have had members watch them and some members family(mom ,sister, niece), or their trusted babysitters.
  • I have a few SAHM friends that we swap childcare for appt like that. DH flexes his week so he is home every Fri afternoon.

I like the posting to fb idea. I have seen other friends do that. GL!

  • I have always brought mine with me....also to appts for other kids (I have 3). I always bring a few books/easy toys (they have little books with markers that are colorless but color the pages - they sell them at Target).
