10 wks 2 days, 2nd appointment, couldn't find heartbeat on Doppler... past loss mentioned

So I'm feeling anxious, I have my first ultrasound in 2 days on the 18th.... It is on the One year of my loss last year. I started being super super all day nauseous at around 6wks 4days and it lasted about 2 weeks. 2 days after thanksgiving I had a 24 hour cold bug and threw up twice (only time I have actually thrown up) then after that my nausea all the sudden got way better and 90% disappeared I was at about 8wks. Today at 10wks 2days I had my 2nd check up and all my blood work/labs and blood pressure looks great from previous visit... But couldn't locate heartbeat.... I know it's not entirely uncommon, but the doctor seemed anxious and double checked twice asking that my ultrasound is in 2 days. I will be a first time mom, we live in Florida but are from Michigan we leave Saturday to go home for a week to visit for Christmas and this is when we plan on announcing....so all the timing and previous loss has my feeling worried. Can any moms help put me at ease?

  • Are you 100% sure that your dates are right? If there's any possibility you ovulated later than day 14 of your cycle, then that might be why they couldn't detect a heartbeat with the doppler. I'm sorry for your previous loss and the worry you're going through right now. Hopefully you will get good news at your ultrasound this week!

  • Its tricky to get a HB on Doppler anytime before 12 weeks (and even after, sometimes!). I find it odd your doc would've acted anxious about that, since its very normal. We just got a HB on Doppler yesterday at 11.5 weeks.
Sending positive and relaxing thoughts your way!

  • I have no idea to be honest, first day of last period was on October 5th on a Sunday, I know exactly bc it was 5 days late which was really weird bc I have ALWAYS been regular to a T but I had moved out of state beginning of September and was on my period during move so I figured I was late from stress. This was a unplanned surprise so I don't know when I ovulated.
  • I was 11 weeks last Friday - the same day as my first OB appt and they couldn't find the heart beat with a doppler either.  They had two different OB's try.  Finally they brought in a portable US machine and found baby no problem.

Fingers crossed that yours will turn out the same.

  • I'd be on a 28-day cycle for forever, just like you, but the month before we got our BFP, my period arrived five days early. I estimated my due date based on a 28-day cycle, and when we went for the u/s, they put us five days early.

Sounds like you're counting your EDD based on a 28-day cycle, so fingers crossed that you just ovulated five days late (like the previous month) and baby is just a little bit younger than you thought. That would explain why it's hard to locate the doppler!

Good luck with your u/s! T&Ps for you and your little one!

  • Thanks everyone, I guess I am just very overwhelmed, I never realized how much I didn't know about pregnancy until this surprise happened lol This has been a bit of an ordeal, and as long as everything is fine we announce to our parents/families for xmas... Let's just say his family will be an obstacle... And living 1300miles from our families has made this a very crazy situation. But I feel blessed.
  • I know I am a lurker, but I just wanted to help ease your worry by telling you that I had an OB appointment when I was also 10 weeks and a few days. My OB told me she wouldn't even try because she feels they are not easy to find that early and only create anxiety. Good luck with everything and fx your US goes well!
  • We couldn't find my baby's heartbeat on the doppler when I went in at 9 weeks, 3 days. She kept picking up mine and said she was pretty sure the baby was 'hiding' behind some of my blood vessels. We did a mini handheld ultrasound scan and could see it just beating away in there. So, maybe it's just too early! Good luck!

  • So sorry to hear of your previous loss. Like everyone else has said, under 12 weeks it can be hard to pick up HB. Good luck with your ultrasound FX all goes well!
  • My midwife reminds all patients that before 12wks they may not be able to find it, and after that it may be tricky. The doctor at my work said 15wks is when he would expect to hear it.

I had one of the girls at work try with the hospital doppler at 9+1 and we found nothing. At 10, I found nothing. At 10+3 I found him on the doppler.

Try to stay calm, it's still so early for the doppler. An ultrasound is much more accurate. And symptoms mean nothing, I was 100% symptom free with DS and only slightly nauseous with this one (

  • We went in at 10 weeks & 2 days. It took the dr about 30 mins to find the heartbeat He Says Sometimes Its hard find it
  • Hang in there. I am 12 weeks today and they couldn't find the heartbeat at my appointment this morning. Sent me right down the hall to the ultrasound room and there was baby, doing just fine- the tech said the baby was probably moving around too much for the doppler to work.

FX for you! I know it's hard not to worry but it is probably nothing.

  • T&ps for you. Dopplers are tricky, like all of the other posters have said. Fx that your us is reassuring and that you get good news.

  • My MWs always warn me when they try for the first time (11w & 10w) that they might not be able to find it, it's not that uncommon.  I have a friend that had that happen, but they were able to find the HB on u/s no problem!

Same happened to me when I went in last week at 11w2d. It took the nurse 5-10 minutes just to find the HB and then my HB kept overpowering it a few times. Hopefully your next apt will go better! Good luck- sending positive vibes your way!
  • It's still early too. I heard mine for the first time today @ 10+4. My dr did NOT expect to hear it. In fact she warned me ahead of time saying she didn't want to get my hopes up by looking for it. Hang in there. You're so close.
  • Last Friday at 11.5 weeks my OB couldn't find the HB with the Doppler. The first thing she told me was that it might take awhile to find it and she may not be able to, but it's not a big deal. She went and got the portable u/s and there was baby squirming away. It's fairly common to not be able to locate HB with a Doppler at the stage. Baby is tiny and squirmy. Fx for a great u/s.

This same thing happened to me when I was 10 weeks 2 days (am 11:6 now). I have had 2 previous losses so we were terrified. The doc was able to get us into ultrasound right away and everything was fine. My placenta is in the front of my uterus so it made it difficult to hear the heartbeat. I will be 12 weeks tomorrow and am going in for the ultrasound again Thursday. I too have had horrible morning sickness with previous pregnancies and with this one it was bad for about a week and then got much better. It's all normal, and each pregnancy is different but it is still worrisome! I get it! My last loss, I was supposed to be 15 weeks but baby only measured 12 so I am nervous to be approaching this milestone again. Good luck! I wish you all the best.
  • My 10w1d appt was today and doc was unable to locate the heartbeat with the doppler, but said not to worry and that it's pretty common.

  • Thank you everyone :) I'm so glad I have so many mommies to ask, I am happy and feel blessed but this has been an overwhelming experience so far, being I just moved 1300miles from home, issues with my SO parents... So not expecting them to handle it well, previous loss makes it scarier and I have struggled to find a job. Just need some TLC, and stay positive for thursday. Thank you all for your support.... Thos has been a trying and adjusting time for us :) but it is a blessing in the end
  • I'm 10w3d today and had my appt earlier. My doc said she'd try to locate the heartbeat for fun but that it's very possible she won't be able to locate it since my uterus is not above my pubic bone enough yet. I didn't hear the heartbeat today but I saw it on my US last week so I'm not concerned. She said it's totally normal.
  • Don't be too worried it's still too early to find a heart beat with the doppler ..your US will be way better at identifying the heart beat..a.nd if your blood work and urine show up fine you should be good! stop worrying and enjoy your pregnancy :)
