Daycare Holiday Breaks

I was somewhat surprised that our daycare is closed from 12/25-1/5. It's not a big deal for us because I'd be off anyway, but they're closing for a week and a half, and still charging the entire month (not to mention that I already had to keep B home all last week because of his fever).

Is it pretty standard for daycares to close that long? MIL was surprised to hear that. As healthcare workers, neither she nor FIL could ever take that entire week.

  • Ours is closed Xmas Day and New Years Day. Open the day before and after both. I'm the opposite... as a teacher I wish they were closed! But yours seems closed and you have to pay. Thats not right.

  • We send LO to a "school" - so he's off for the next two weeks.  They pretty much follow the county school schedule (apart from summers obviously).  It kind of stinks, but we have really helpful ILs (not to mention my current unemployed state), so we make do.  The benefits certainly outweigh that drawback though, so we stick with it.  I am kind of bitter about having to pay for those two weeks off though, because that shit is expensive!

Our previous daycare was only closed 10 days a year, which meant they were just closed Christmas and New Years day.

  • Originally, ours was closed 12/25 and 1/1 and had half days 12/24 and 12/31.  Then, they put up the vacation sign up sheet for parents to find out who would be out when, and so many people were taking off the 26th that they decided to close that day too.  Even though my husband and I were not going to send LO in that day anyway, I don't think it's right that they added a day with only a few weeks notice and still are charging for a whole week that week.  I have no problem paying for federal holiday days or a yearly staff training day because we were told about them when we chose their daycare, but if they are going to be adding random days, they should prorate tuition.  What about the people that were counting on them to be open that day and still have to pay for that day's tuition AND pay for a babysitter? If I were one of them, I would complain!
  • @musicalsilver‌ that's how ours is. There's also a break between summer session and the school year which is when I go back to work for the fall, so that actually is more problematic for me than this break.

B is going to be at daycare for (hopefully) 12 1/2 days this month. Sooo much money!!

Ours is closed for the stat holidays, so only 25th, 26th, and 1st. But she is closed any time her kids' school it closed which is anywhere from 1 day to 9 days a month. I still pay the same no matter how many days off their are. I look at it as though I'm really just paying a yearly tuition broken into 12 payments.

ETA I knew this would be the case, and only picked this DC because I knew grandparents could help out on the closed days. She is significantly cheaper than a regular center.

  • Ours is closed for 2 weeks.  It's fine because I'm not going to work for 3 weeks, which is how long my son's winter break is.  We pay the full rate also, but the daycare is actually just part of a preschool and it's considered annual tuition prorated monthly, so no single month is any cheaper than another.

    12/24-12/26 - closed
12/31 - closes early at noon
    1/1 - closed

We pay weekly whether they are closed and even if we aren't there.

  • Ours is closed 25-26 and 1st. They are currently asking about attendance in each classroom to see how many teachers they'll need but will be open the eve's

We pay for full week regardless. I think that's crazy that yours is going to be closed that long and charge you!

  • I'd be bugged about them being closed that much but really not about having to pay. I look at the rate as an annual tuition, split over 12 months because they pay the teachers for vacation, still have to pay heat, taxes, etc.
