Diabetics/Moms of diabetics...Help.

I'm having a problem with DS1 and it seems to go beyond typical "want to be normal" behavior.  I'm not sure how much of this rambling mess is needed info, so skip over anything that isn't needed.

I've been up since 4am with DS1 (almost 12).  He was up puking, running high, ketones, the whole works, headed for keto-acidosis.  I did not take him to the hospital due to icy roads and treated aggressively (42 units of insulin) here after calling his doctor.  All of the above are normal at this time.

The part I'm struggling with: he made himself sick on purpose.  He faked giving himself his shot (broke the needle off) and then snuck a couple of hershey kisses.  He did it to get out of going to school b/c he is sick of being the only kid with diabetes at his school.  He wants to be normal and was hoping that if he just pretended he didn't have diabetes, maybe it would go away.  He is also being teased by one kid b/c of his diabetes.

I already called his school to discuss the kid picking on him, but I don't know what to do about the rest.  I feel so helpless.  He caused himself to be so sick and miserable.  Do I let that be the natural consequence? Is stuff like this normal for kids his age dealing with this?  What can I do to help him understand he just can't do this?  I've talked to him about coming to me with anything and how important his health is.  I'm at my wits end.

  • I echo what both pp's said and really like @FamousEa‌ suggestion if you giving his insulin. His safety is important, which you obviously know. Chronic illness is tough for anyone let alone a kid who is wanting to fit in with his peers. Give him lots of opportunity to talk about how he feels about his situation.

Could the school nurse perhaps do some education with his class to help the other kids understand more about his situation?

  • Being diabetic is frustrating as an adult. I can't imagine how isolating it is for a kid. Hugs to you and your son.

  • Aw. :( No experience here, but that story made my heart so sad. It's hard enough to have to take insulen (I hate hate hate needles) and to feel different, but add ridiculous bullying to the mix and that's just 100% miserable. Poor boy.

I'll be keeping your DS in my T&Ps.

  • Sorry it was a bit of a post and run. Our internet took a crap. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I'll talk to my exH about camp, since he has them most of the summer.
