Help with going to one nap

My boys are right at 17 months and still on 2 naps (9/1:30). One of them always takes both, and one of them sometimes just plays out during one of them. We are about to travel for the holidays, and I'm wondering if that will be a good time to drop since I'll have my mom and husband to help. I'm not dying to do it, because I love having two breaks, but I'm wondering if having help and a different than normal schedule might be good. Questions:
-Should I wait until I have real signs that they are ready?
-Has anyone attempted a drop but gone back to 2?
-What do you do to keep your kids sane while pushing back their nap by a few hours?

Re: Help with going to one nap

  • My twins are only 7.5 months, but the transition was hard on my DD. We started around 17 months or so - and no real reason other than her morning nap was getting harder and harder. We started early, pushing it back. There was about a week or 2 when she was falling asleep at 11 or 11:30 and then at 12 while eating lunch. I'd say it took about 2 weeks. But once she was down to 1 nap, I loved the weekends: we did so much in the mornings: farmer's markets, parks, out to breakfast, etc. I love 1 nap. Can't wait until my boys are at 1 nap.

  • The twins transitioned to one nap around 15 mo? They started fighting afternoon nap and that was my cue. I'm a huge fan of not fixing what's not broken, so I'd wait for them to let you know.

My oldest dropped down to one nap at 9mo. He's always defied normal sleep conventions, that one.

I agree with pp keep both naps until it becomes impossible! We switched at 13 months when they would play for over an hour in their cribs and totally fought the morning nap. It was hard for the first month or so but now finally we are getting better. We had to slowly push the nap until we reached 12. Eventfully I'd like to go to 1 but I'm not fighting it right now.
At first we had to do early bedtimes , normally they go to bed at 7. We would put them down between 6-630 as by then they where in total meltdown mode. Also in the beginning I NEVER took them out if I couldn't be home by 10 because if they napped for 5 seconds in the car it would ruin their real nap.I wish mine had waited longer, I miss morning nap!
